Classy outing by Haywood, this could have been REALLY, REALLY ugly. Looks like the Pirates are continuing to improve while Pikeville takes a backseat to the Belfry program again. When will this rivalry become competitive again?

wow. didnt expect the margin to be this wide!! Congrats to Belfry!!!

Honestly it could have been worse, it was 48-6 fairly early in the third when Belfry started subbing.
Still Belfry came out rusty I thought but they got it done and did it in convincing fashion.

N-E-V-E-R.... And the sooner that the Pikeville faithful realize that, the better. The glory days are over. They just do not have the talent they once had and Belfry is as strong as ever.

These things run in cycles I wouldnt count out the panthers just yet. They have alot of tradition and who I believe will be the coaching answer long term for them. But I can't say that I hate seeing Belfry beat Pikeville for the time being.

From all indications Haywood had Belfry on cruise control from the opening kickoff. Haywood spread the ball around to all the backs, subbed early, and the Pirates ease into the bye week with yet another domination of Pikeville.
I think Pikeville finally has the coaching staff to start getting the program on track, but they still have to get the players. Ilove seeing Belfry romp Pikeville, but at the same time I hate seeing it as well.

Now it's time for the real season to begin for Belfry. The Pirates get to open the district slate vs. an improved Pike Central team looking to prove they are finally ready to compete with Belfry.
The Pirates have now survived a brutal non-district schedule and came through with a 4-2 record, I'll be 100% honest I expected them to be 2-4. They have improved dramatically, the defense is getting better, the line is better, and the young QB is playing better. The key for Belfry now is to take care of business and realize that for as much as they have improved, it doesn't mean anything if they lose to PC and SC. Additionally, even though Belfry is firmly entrenched in the 3A Title race... they will have to put themselves on an entirely different level to truly be able to dream of a legitimate run to Bowling Green.

EKU, bye week was last week. We play Pike Central next week @ Pike Central and then Sheldon Clark the week after that at home.

This is about the score I expected. Anyone have any stats on Varney?
Congrats Pirates!

I think around 30-35 yards on 7 carries and 1 TD and an INT. Belfry never needed him, and this really shot down some of the Pikeville folks' theory that if you stopped Thomas, you could compete with Belfry. Too much fullback between Runyon and Carroll for the Panthers to stop.

congrats to the pirates, they cruise again next wk against pc, they got it handed to them by tolsia...

Other observations from the game. Very flat Belfry and very not very good Pikeville. As a couple of others have said, it could have been a massacre. Pikeville scores a TD pass on the Belfry JV and freshman and on a kickoff return against the JV team with 10 players on the field. I really like watching Ratliff and Maynard play. They are, IMO, truly the heart of the Panther team. Belfry played at about 50% for most of the game and it was plenty. I think they have had to get up for the 3-game stretch against 5A opponents and it was harder for them tonight. i hope the people of Pikeville allow Ben time to build the program back the right way. Pikeville does have a huge talent gap right now. They have some good players, but no real game changers. Even on runs that could have gone to the house, Belfry had multiple players that could chase the Panther backs down. I have never been a believer in the theory that this series should be cancelled. However, Pikeville must become more competitive against Belfry in the next couple of years or a lot of people will be thinking that a tougher team should be onn Belfry's schedule. I hope that never happens, but......

I'm a true believer in this Belfry team. When I seen them at Prestonsburg, I thought they relied on Varney too much. That has all changed now. They have gotten much better as this season has unfolded.

I wish Pikeville would call and say guys lets stop the series for awhile. Belfry doesn't need this game. And for the folks say that this is a money game. If it wasn't for Belfry fans they wouldn't be much attendance

I hate to agree with you greek, but the attendance for Pikeville was terrible. How are their kids supposed to feel like playing hard for 48 minutes when the stands are half empty on their side. Pikeville fans are fickle. They need to realize that to get back to the penthouse, they must build a solid foundation and do things the right way in order to get back on top.

Congrats to Belfry! Belfry is looking sharp and picking up alot of steam. Belfry is going to make a long run into the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in Bowling Green before its all said and done! Belfry is really improving and getter better as each game comes along. There Confidence is building!

Sort of thought this one would go this way.

Belfry even wore their red pants for this game, but IMO they should have just saved them for SC and Johnson Central.

Joe,
While we are at it, should we cancel Kentucky / Tennessee since it has been 25 years since the Cats won? I can hear Rich Brooks calling Lane Kiffin now! That's a great idea! How about we cancel Thanksgiving if there's a turkey shortage, or Christmas when there isn't much money for gifts?
I have heard you talk about this with every breath on Monday Nights and, have started turning off some broadcasts because I feel that you do not have a true understanding of things like tradition. There are certain things that are ingrained in us since youth. I remember the good times and the bad on both sides of this series and there have always been swings in the cycle. While it has not been competitive for a while, it is still a rivalry and, if you don't believe that, I challenge you to talk to the people in Belfry that enjoy levelling a beating on Pikeville more than any other victory. Then take a trip down 119 and talk to the Pikeville faithful, though few and far between, and ask what they feel their biggest game of the year is, at least rivalry-wise. The Belfry and Pikeville football game had been and, I believe could be again, considered the true Pike County Bowl year after year. If Ben Howard is allowed to build this program, the correct way, there will be a shift. Am I saying it will happen next year? Of course not, but it will happen in time!
So, quit boring us with talk of ending traditions.... change the record. Enjoy high school football in the mountains, good and bad, for what it is; excellent Friday night entertainment where you get to see talented and dedicated young men put their blood, sweat and tears into these magical moments where we can see something spectacular!

If Belfry was still in a 6 team district I would say it was time to end the rivalry, but with the current 4 team district, I think Belfry has plenty of opportunities to play quality non-district teams and can sacrifice a game against the rival Panthers.
The dominance has been cyclical, but I don't think I can recall one team being on a completely different level for such a long ammount of time at any point in the series.

How is running Copley out of town after a decent season working out for Pikeville this year?
