I for one am a big supporter of coal. IMO anyone with any common sense should be. If all these ***N tree huggers would do some proper research they would find that stip mining is not harmful in any way. Just look at what it has done for our area, not only does coal bring jobs, but places like Pikeville hospital and Bob Amos Park would not exist if not for mountain top removal.

100% for coal! Strip mining requires less workers than deep mining. It may be safer but it causes more damage than good. though it seems hazard was made from strip mining.

I am going to plead ignorance just because I don't know enough about the Coal industry. Being from the Northern part of the state, we hear nothing. It's not discussed in any forum. Though Cinergy is a significant Coal user, also rely on the river based power supply as well. There has been no discussions of significance of reducing or eliminating Coal based power in the Cincinnati area.

There has been much talk of lay offs and mines shutting down in martin county. Many of my friends and family members have been layed off. But im hearing that Jim booth is still hiring people.

Surface mining is also very dangerous, if you look at MSHA's records you will see that in 4 of the past 5 years the number of fatalities in underground mining and surface mining are very similar, the exception being in 2006 when 3 separate accidents in a 5 month period killed 19 men.
2005 fatalities 11 underground and 7 surface.
2006 fatalities 36 underground and 9 surface.
2007 fatalities 17 underground and 13 surface.
2008 fatalities 15 underground and 12 surface.
2009 fatalities to date 5 underground and 9 surface.

Thanks for the info. Doesnt underground mining require more workers?

It really depends on which system you use underground, if you have one a one section mine with 1 continuous miner and run 2 production shifts and 1 maintenance shift then more than likely you would have a minimum of 32-34 employees.
It also depends on the type and amount of equipment you have at a surface mine, if you have the basic equipment let's say 1 spread that operates 2 production shifts you would have a minimum of 31 employees.

Coal is the only way. I myself was layed off at the beginnin of August. I wasn't a miner. I was a salesman for a drill supply company. I sold drill steel, drill bits, bit subs, top subs, deck bushings, etc. With the decline in EKY, companies shuttin down, cuttin hours back, and cuttin back on their spendin, they had no choice but to let me go.
As for the treehuggers, no they don't care about the families who are sufferin. The worst part about all of it, they don't realize that it's not just coal miners and their families. If they were to do away with MTD, it was also put companies like CAT, Komatsu, Atlas Copco and many more out of business.

What am I missing in the rest of the thread. Why are they talking of shutting down the mines? Is it due to the need for Coal being reduced due to alternative measures, or have the mines been mined out?

Alot more business than that would shut down. Small businesses would not have a shot in Eastern Ky. I have been a small business owner in East Ky for 13 years and I am really seeing the effects of it right now. People just have the money to spend on necessary items.

So the companies that provide the parts to these mines are feeling it too. Wildcatk23 or for who was asking, at the mines I worked before I got crushed, we had 36 workers for three shifts, and thankfully they are running well enough that they havent had to cut back any since March when they laid off the contractors and a couple of company men..
