Who would you vote as the best lead-off man in the mountains. I know there are some good lead-off hitters out there but who is the best overall when it comes to hitting, bunting, on base percentage, speed, steals?
My top two would be Pikeville's lead-off hitter not sure of his name but very athletic and I think he is the catcher. Second I would put Ethan Daniel from Lawrence County up there, and even the kid from Johnson Central..

I haven't seen many games this year but of what I have seen I would say that Ethan Daniel gets my vote.

Very good at putting the ball in play and using his speed once on the base.

Not because I'm from Prestonsburg, but Grant Anderson is without the best. His batting avg. Is above 550 and has power also, after watching everyone from around here and the teams that were at the All A. He is tough.

Carson from North Laurel is a heckuva a player and leadoff hitter, if he is still hitting leadoff for them this year like he did the time I seen them play last year.
Haven't seen Clay either this year, but I remember them having a really quick leadoff guy last season, hit lefty I believe and was very fast.

Corey Corum from Clay Co.

Corum hits second when Young is healty. Tyler Young and Marcus Carson are two of the best around IMO. I don't know much about the 14th and 15th, but if they have lead off men as good as these two then they're stacked.

I can promise you Grant Anderson is not the best in the mountains.

Storm Wilson of Somerset and Marcus Carson from North Laurel are almost sure to score when on base. Wilson is a speedy, switch hitter that can hit for power or average from both sides of the plate.

I would put him up there with Storm Wilson, and Marcus Carson.

Marcus Carson - North Laurel
Storm Wilson - Somerset
Tyler Young - Clay Co.
Clay County, and North Laurel also have two speedy guys with Corey Corum who's a Junior and will probably be leading off next year IMO and Zack Storm who hits for power but still has bursting speed down the line.

If Corum played with the mindset that Carson did he'd be unreal. Carson is unbelieveable at just smacking the ball to the left side and letting his wheels work.

Clay has never been a real power in baseball. What has changed in the last 2-3 yrs or is this just a good group of kids?
05-17-2011, 02:36 PM
A good group and kids are getting smarter. They realize that you don't have to be physical freaks to play baseball like you do everything else. Baseball has went from being a side show for the basketball players to being the number one sport. With Smith this thing has a chance of taking off. He's very young, energetic, and the kids love him.

Spencer from Paintsville has looked good this season

Cast my vote for Carson. He's been a great leadoff hitter since he was a young pup.
05-17-2011, 11:34 PM
I would have to say you're exactly right if Corum had the mindset Carson had he would be excellent at the lead off spot. Tyler Young on the other hand brings speed, and power to the lead off spot as you said with 5 HR's the kids swelled up this year!

Ratliff from Pikeville.
*Also, I think every year Prestonsburg has two or three kids every year that are hitting over .500? To be honest, and I know everyone else is thinking it too, you may want to double check the books? Remember of a guy hits the ball and it bounces off the third baseman's glove, it doesn't go down as a hit?

Thats why the official score keeper should be UNBIASED!

It's pretty obvious when you look at the newspaper and some of these kids' stats are printed in the paper? Their teams have only won 3 or 4 games, but somehow they have 5 or 6 players hitting over .500? There is nothing about that makes sense to me?

During the course of this wonderful season, our joke of a local paper (News-Express) has printed maybe 3-4 articles about the Pikeville team that I have seen. Granted, I don't get it every day, but it's an embarrassment of grammatical comedy most days, so I don't waste my money on it too often.

Right on. Worst newspaper ever by a large margin.

Nowadays, it seems like they report on everything BUT what people care about, and when they do "report", it's written worse than a 4th grader. Sports in particular, is a joke anymore.

Considering he is 14 year old freshman, Grant Anderson is not too shabby.

I don't know about exact averages, but Prestonsburg has had some very good hitters over the past few years like Josh Rodebaugh, Tyler Hall and now Grant Anderson.
The program usually always has a few guys who would find a way to get on base, however there just wasn't ever enough talent to always get them across the plate.
Prestonsburg baseball is getting better & better and with young talent like Anderson, Stapleton, Shepherd, etc. they'll get respect from more people in the region. I'm not saying anyone is downing the program, just stating my opinion.

Vorbeck at Corbin 612 AVG 13 HR 17 DB 6 K on the year not bad for a lead-off man!
