I always look at KHSAA and it says that Betsy Layne did beat Allen Central in 2 sets. I did see that Pikeville beat Paintsville the other night and was surprised to see them as #5.
I don't think that South Floyd should be #1 over AC. Overall AC has won 5 sets against South Floyd and South Floyd has only won 2 against AC.
My top 5 would be:
1. Allen Central
2. South Floyd
3. East Ridge
4. Betsy Layne
5. Pikeville

Betsy Layne should be ranked over East Ridge because in my opinion ER may have a good team this year but you have to look at who is in their district, not alot of competition!! Betsy layne now has played very good teams beating Allen Central in 2 matches and taking South Floyd to 3 matches in both games that they have played. I think East Ridge will probably win their district but a region title will stay in the 58th this year.

East Ridge is a lot better quality than you give them credit for. Pikeville defeated Shelby Valley tonight in district play, and play tomorrow against ER for the district championship. Just go to MaxPreps and look at the common opponent results. Pretty daggone even, for example, between BL and Pikeville's common opponents.

The loss to Pburg gives them a black eye though.

I believe a rematch would be different. the 2-0 score is a little misleading as well, since the final was 25-22 in both sets, so it was a hard fought match. They defeated Letcher Central, and BL lost to them. Like I said, head to head comparisons of common opponents paint a more clear picture and show that Pikeville is not necessarily a "weak-sister" to East Ridge, and nor is East Ridge undeserving of their ranking. They are a tough club.

Betsy Layne did defeat Allen Central In 2 matches, BL also lost to AC in 3 very close matches. Bl also played South Floyd very hard in 3 matches mind you one of those games should have been BL's victory if it hadn't been for some very poor line judging. Now this is a fact the 58th district is much stronger then the 57th and no one can say it's not. The 58th has some very strong competiton and always has the strongest teams in the region. AC did not make region last year due to 3 of their players being very ill and couldn't play in the district tournament so that is what happened to AC last year. Yes these teams play each team very different, it depends on who their opponent is but I still dont see ER as strong as any of the 58th team I may not be giving them alot of credit but until they beat a powerhouse team BL stay's ahead. Region will be a hard fought battle and anything can happen when it's tournament time!!!

Wow, poor line judging? Not sure if you are aware, the chair official from that BL-SF game actually came to SF the following week to issue an apology for his poor calls. Had it not been for him keeping BL in the games, and the BL line judge cheering during her calls, then it would have never been close.
10-11-2011, 07:45 AM
WOW,I'm sure that really happened when after that game the officials had to have a meeting and that was the topic of their discussion POOR LINE JUDGING!!!! What does it irritate you that SF sould have lost that game? It is what it is and I'm not on here trying to bash SF they are a good team but they are not unbeatable and they will see that!!!

I would also like to state that South Floyd did not lose anyone last year if i'm not mistaken and BL lost 4 players and they are still as good as SF. So what does that tell you that even on a rebuilding year AC and BL can still beat SF. So if SF wants to make a trip to state they better try to do it this year cause next year they wont even be in the running. Oh and AC lost 2 or 3 players also!!!

My only real problem with your statement is what I have bolded above. The 58th is NOT home to the strongest teams in the region always. That honor rests soley on the shoulders of the 60th district. Belfry, since the 15th region began competing in 2002 (back then it was Reg. 8 in volleyball) has won the region a whopping 7 out of 9 times. Betsy Layne won in 2010 and Allen Central won in 2009. I do not deny that the 59th district has not been the strongest year over year, but it has finally taken off at Pikeville, for example. They have a 12 player freshman class, 10 of whom were on the first Pikeville junior high team to ever make it to the district finals. The program is growing in popularity, and being from such a small school and having to compete with the cheerleading squad, basketball team, and softball teams for a small pool of girls, it took time to catch on. Might I also remind you that the same freshman class also went to Allen Central last year and won their tournament, losing only one match over the 2 days? They will be a force to be reckoned with in the region over the next several years.
The 58th has, traditionally, been very strong and competitive. But (and it pains me to say this) Belfry has owned the 15th since the inception of volleyball in this region. Betsy Layne and Allen Central winning one time each doesn't make them a powerhouse. Good luck to all the teams.

Very true statement about Belfry thank you for correcting me. Belfry has had a very strong team in the past but if i'm not wrong hasn't it almost always been a team from the 58th to play Belfry in the region championship games over the past years I may be wrong and please feel free to correct me. But Belfry's program has really declined since the loss of their coach Rick Mounts. Now as I have said region really is a toss up and so is the 58th district. I look forward to seeing some teams really go at it!!! Because this will be a battle!!!

That level of dominance simply can not be ignored. Yes, they have struggled since the loss of their coach, but that is to be expected with any transition. How would AC or BL fare with the loss of their respective coaches? I do agree with you on one thing...the 15th will be a battle this year.

Pike Central another 60th district team was in the region finals against Belfry many times.
