I'm taking Holy Cross all the way to a State Champsionship

Playin the way they did friday i think the jumpers lay it on holy cross by 2 td..like ive said all season 2a better watch out for the biar jumper they are the real deal
11-19-2011, 11:31 AM
I would love to see the Jumpers win this one, but I think Cov. Holy Cross will be too much. GO JUMPERS!

I dont know much about Somerset but I know that Holy Cross is rollin. Going thru the play offs and getting little respect. They are playing hard on both sides of the ball and just knocked off the # 1 seat NCC. It was a great game but Holy Cross could have just as easily won by 14 in that one. I think Holy Cross continues to roll on to state, winning their first semi to add to their first regional championship.

Jumpers need to continue improving to beat a team out of Northern Kentucky. This group is peaking when it matters, but must build on this playoff momentum. Don't think for a second that this group will be shell-shocked by a large crowd, great athletes, or the state semi-finals appearance. Jumpers 3peat in region... they've been here before and understand that they must take care of business this week. I hope that this group is hungry to play their next 48 minutes. The "mountain" the Jumpers face is not insurmountable.

I don't know much about Somerset either, but I do know that the Indians prepare very well for each game. I just wish the HC defense got more credit, they played very well last night.

hc by 15 35-20 to much speed for the jumpers
11-19-2011, 04:55 PM
If this game was at Somerset, I'd pick Somerset. But the Jumpers have a 2 and half to 3 hour drive up here. I'll take HC in a close one
Go Indians!!!

Don't know what the outcome will be but I can assure you that the speed will not be a shock. No member of the Jumper defense runs above a 5.0 40 including the defensive line which may be the best in 2a. Once again I don't make specific score predictions but I can assure you it will be a close game either way.

I also don't think the speed will make a factor, but HC's aggressive defense and hard hitting offense could. This team has a dangerous mix of speed and aggression and all 11 guys on both sides of the ball are very physical.

Holy Cross has taken over #1 spot in Calpreps rating for 2A
just barely edging Glasgow 1952 vs 1959 national ranking
Somerset comes in #4 with NCC dropping to #3
OCath drops to #7 just ahead of Owen County at #8
Holy Cross is red hot coming off strong wins over former #1 ranked
team and 45-0 over a strong #8
If they continue at this level it will be a long ride home for the jumpers.
Should a good matchup
I'll go with HCC by 14

Whatched some Somerset game film. Got some big boys there but I think they are going to have fits with Holy Cross's line on both sides of the ball. HC's line have size and speed and dont think Somerset will be able to handle it very well at all. They look like more of a passing team that tries to run just enough to try and keep teams off balance. HC's rush will put a major damper on that passing game, they wont have enough time to find the rcvr's. HC's defensive backfield will match up well to Somersets rcvrs and with the rushed passing look for a few picks by HC. There is always a chance for anyone to win but I see HC by 2 touchdowns.

Are you sure you're not watching Somerset game film from 2 seasons ago? Somerset has only one offensive lineman over 220 lbs. The right tackle is a sophomore and is about 6'4" 265 lbs. Other than that they are all between 210-220 and very mobile.

Somerset knows what it will take to win. They will be ready.

Somerset has a great defensive line actually. Trey Slaughter is a returning first team all stater from last year and has over 100 tackles on the season. Tevin Slaughter is a great athlete as well returning from a foot injury that kept him out for several games and he is hovering around the 100 tackle mark as well. Throw in Bridge Smith, Kagen Skidmore, and Jacobi Gilmore and the SHS Defensive line is probably the best in 2a. Not many 3-4 defensive lineman make as many plays as these kids do... However I will say this: The Fuller kid gets rid of the football so quickly it might not matter who is playing on the defensive line! This is going to be a good game, once again the Jumpers have been here before and they will handle the situation just fine. Limiting turnovers and handling the pressure of HCC will be Somersets keys to victory.

Having seen both teams play, I will take Somerset by at least 10.
11-20-2011, 07:16 PM
Somerset has played the schedule to get them this far and i think it continues. Early part in the season the jumpers offense sputtered with much better competition but those kinks worked out and they are hitting on all cylinders and are hitting the peak at the right time. I gotta go with The Briar jumpers in this one.

That would be great, but this is new territory for HC. I'm cautiously optimistic.

No, who is sure of anything. If they arnt big they were playing against a very small team.

The semi-final game this Friday will be played at Newport Stadium, not Holmes High School.
For Somerset fans traveling up for the game, here's the address:
Newport High School, 900 E. 6th St. Newport, KY
Reasons: Newport has fieldturf, Holmes has an even mix of grass and dirt.
Can somebody change the thread title so it has Newport?

Thanks for the information. I was at Newport's field once but it was in 1983 for a Somerset vs Newport Catholic semi - final game that the Jumpers won 14-13. I had no idea where it was located, just that it was on a hillside.

I'm assuming a moderator has to change the title...? Was the game originally at Holmes and got changed? For some reason, all of the Somerset fans were thinking it was there...we better get the word out.
I could be wrong, but I'm thinking Somerset hasn't played on turf in a while....maybe the Belfry game last year. This matchup is a mysterious one, with us not really playing any of the same teams. I think Somerset could beat anyone in 2A this year if they play like they have the last few games...

As of this moment, it appears that Somerset has the edge in the poll. Interesting. That may be because our non-NKY friends may not be aware of what Holy Cross brings to the table on both sides of the ball. Offensively, HC has numerous skilled players. They run a very complex spread offense with multiple formations. However, defense has been the biggest area of improvement this year (especially, during the playoffs). They are playing angry right now dictating what the opponents can do. Rather than go into a lot more detail, I suggest that those who want to see for themselves should go back and watch the replay of part or all of Friday night's game against NCC on iHigh.com - http://www.ihigh.com/nkysports/broadcast...verlight=1

Somerset played Hazard on turf this season in week 4.
