Prestonsburg/Paintsville Scrimmage 3/14/12
#1
Any thoughts or predictions ?
#2
If P'Burg has been outside much they should do well against Paintsville. I ve heard they have been inside a lot and haven't face any live pitching plus they don't start their practices until 6pm which limits their ability to face any game situtations so I will take the Blackcats.

It won't do any good to pick any winners. Both coaches will be subbing VERY frequently and throwing numerous pitchers and working on many different situations.

Exactly what a "Scrimmage" is for. I would say neither coach cares about any score tomorrow. They will be looking at players and looking for things that they may need to work a little more on.

Scrimmage or not.....I can't wait to see and hear that pop and ping!!!!

^^ I agree with you Hook. People put to much emphasis on scrimages. The final score in a scrimage does not matter. A scrimage should be used to fine tune your team, and find out your strengths & most importantly your weakness.

^The Tigers will prolly take around 20 kids and I would say that every single one of them will be on the field at some time or another and they will prolly throw around 8 to 10 pitchers as well.

Stonecrest? Time ? Thanks in advance.

This is all good and all but if they keep score I wonder if they do care? If either team gets beat 10 or more runs I guess nothing will be said to the losing team from the coaches. and I dont think Paintsville has 20 kids total in the entire baseball system but usually I'm wrong around stats and totals anyway. Hope both teams care enough to compete.

I expected nothing less.

For your info..You are WRONG.....The Tigers have 30 kids in the system and 21 on the Varsity Roster. This just goes to show that my statement in the football thread is spot on.....:dontthink

Wow Hook! I didn't know Paintsville had 21? on the varsity roster? With that many the Tigers can easily compete with the likes of Pikeville or Johnson Central right? I figured I was wrong as usual but glad they have that many comitted to baseball.
You can"t run a program when you start practice at 6pm when everyone you compete against has completed theirs and "scrimmaged" before you even see live pitching before you play the first spring training game but hey I'm probably wrong again. We will see how "spot on" you are later.

I personally don't see any problem with going at 6 pm. The Tigers have not been able to go outside due to weather. Every chance they have had to get outside. They have. Going at 6 also gives the kids time to go home, get a meal and complete any assignments they may have.

Now, that being said. Do I agree with everything ANY coach does or doesn't do? No, If I said I did. I would be a liar. That's the way it is. No matter who the coach is. People are NEVER going to agree with everything they do. Anyone who says they do are liars.

Scrimmage starts at 6 tonight at Stone Crest. Can't wait!

Sorry, got my days mixed up. Good luck to both teams.

Tonight's scrimmage was what it was. If anything was taken from the P-ville side they do need to improve on hitting and pitching. J Moore probably showed the best as far as pitching. Hitting I'm not real sure, but the Daniels kid I believe will take someones spot or be D_Hitter. Then again he came into hit when P-BURG was on the 7th or 8th pitcher. He is just a pure ATHLETE. Upper classmen have got to take control or younger kids on squad will fill their spot. Look forward to Pikevile game Monday. P-BURG was hitting the ball well. Shane will have these kids ready for any team I believe.

Was pleased with tonight's game. Tigers played ALL 21 players 2 to 4 innings in the field and EVERY Tiger had at least two at bats. All pitchers throwed well. Moore did throw well and Sublett actually did also. Yes, two runs were scored the inning he threw. BUT, both were allowed on routine fly balls that should have been caught. Should have been 7 pitches, 2 outs. Tigers gave up 4 runs tonight. Every one was UNearned.

Daniel DID kill one , that with last season's bats. It may still be going...lol. Thought Dustin VanHoose came in and played well in the OF for the Tigers. I will agree also that....Some of the older Tigers better step up. Cause there are some younger ones just itching for the chance.

Things are bright for the Tigers IMO. Can't wait for the REAL season to start! GO TIGERS!!!

If anyone has CROW, I'm going to have to eat it. Sounds like the Tigers may have won this scrimmage and that group of middle schoolers stepped up again. Guess 6pm practice start time isn't so bad after all, but after reading kidatheart post Pburg may be tough if they have eight pitchers. Best of luck to both teams this year. Who stood out in the game for both teams?
#17
Moore threw the ball effectively, as did Sublett, Stewart, and if I'm not mistaken Colton Caldwell got an inning in? Correct me if I'm wrong OTH. It was eye opening to realize the impact of the BBCOR bats on baseball in the area. Expect to see a ton of low scoring affairs, and coaching/exuction will be as crucial as its ever been here. P-Burg has improved leaps and bounds since Simpkins got there and it's easy to see why they embrace him so much there. Dustin VanHoose will have to carry a big load of the innings for Paintsville this year, and I hope to see him rise up to the challenge of being the guy that wants the ball in big game situations. All in all outside of the errors (mental and physical) in the outfield at times, Paintsville looked fairly solid defensively. Kash Daniel will eventually work his way into the lineup I feel like and I look for him and Stewart to both get reps at 1B and DH.

About the bolded part, they threw a lot of guys and they definitely got what seemed like younger pitchers some experience tonight. There is some potential there for the future but I don't see some of those kids getting many varsity innings. Not knocking them at all because I completely agree with how Shane got them reps on the hill in the scrimmage and if I were coach I would've done the same thing, but I doubt a few of those kids will see much serious action at the varsity level outside of about 4 or 5 at the most.

You are correct. The Tigers also threw 8 pitchers. D.Vanhoose, Burchett, Stewart, Moore, Caldwell, Sublett, Carroll, Taylor.

I agree. There is ALWAYS a need for improvement in both. But, I was just sitting here and going over the book from last night and breaking things down for Coach to look at this evening at practice.

Tigers pitching: 8 Pitchers

36 Batters Faced
0 ERs
4 UNearned Runs
6 BB
12 Ks
1 HBP
136 pitches thrown
0 HITS

Yes, there is much room for improvement. BUT, that isn't to shabby of an outing for a bunch of kids on any given night. Especially when last night was the first time that they had stepped on an actual mound this season and faced live batting. Heck, I think that was actually the first time they have thrown from an actual mound this season.

GREAT JOB TIGERS!!!!

Lets not sell out the older kids before the season starts. You guys are making it sounds as if the younger guys were they only ones to play........I saw several others in uniforms tonight, and to be honest......no one really did anything headline worthy. It was a scrimmage and yes there were some mistakes make....so what? Learn and go on. Let the season start before you start taking positions away.

And mistakes are gonna be made by EACH AND EVERYONE of them through out the season.

Sounds like the scrimmage was used wisely by both teams. Good luck to both in the regular season!!

Kyle Chaffin had the hit in the 1st inning and I think Kyle Welch also had a hit to left field towards the end of the scrimmage also.
#27
^I had the hit in the first. Don't recall any other one though.

I'd say he is talking about the line drive hit to LF that Moore misplayed. If it was marked down as an error that was the correct ruling. That ball should've been caught.
#29
Clearly the ball was missed by Moore in the outfield because of the classic mistake of not taking the first step back but as it was stated earlier this was just a scrimmage and a mistake was and will be made this early on in the season. These kids are still just that kids and they are human. I think sometimes us fans forget that. Scrimmage games are a time to work on these things. All and all I think it was a good effort by the Tigers. Can't wait to see what the rest of the season holds.

How did Anderson from Prestonsburg look?
