Russell Co was too fast for Whitley. Same ole Whitley, move the ball well but just cant score enough. With the schedule Whitley plays, they could be looking at 3-7 again. The youngster for Whitley looked good out of the backfield. Can't remember his name but he needs more touches. And even though RUTG will disagree, throw the ball some before you get behind 21-0 or 28-7.

Congrats to russell county i predicted this one just about right....

Russell Co played a heck of a game tonight, and much of it was with Nick Britt on the sideline. I believe 6 different Lakers scored in this game, and the final score could have been even worse. Whitley Co will get better as the year goes on. I have to agree with the above post....this WC team may be more effective with a pass focused offense. Of course they may have been trying to eat up the clock tonight. Bryant is still a beast......hats off to him. He is as powerful of a full back as there is in KY HS football. WC fans should be proud of this team....with the schedule they have there record will not indicate how good they are.
The New Look Lakers have multiple scoring threats that will make this one of the best 4A offenses in the state. The defense has to continue to get better for this team to make a statement come playoff time.

3 TDs, not sure of the yardage. He saw somewhat limited action due to breathing issues from a sinus flare-up.

This game was closer than the score.
Id have to disagree with saying it could have been worse. From what i seen Britt played almost the whole game. It was a 2TD ball game midway through the 3rd with Whitley driving before turning it over.
It seemed like Deja Vu from last year after the first quarter, but we seemed to regain compsure and started to come back, but stupid play calling got the best of us. Down 28-14 midway threw the 3rd we go for an onside kick instead of trying to pin Russell deep.
After watching tonights game, i must say i was wrong about Britt being the best player on the field and most valuable weapon for Russell County. Truth be told, Russell Countys kicker is there best weapon. Whitley had to start on there own 20 all night because the kid was kicking the ball off for touchbacks every time, and before halftime even tried like a 56 yarder, which was only 5 or 6 yards short.
Russell County is very good and i didnt expect to win this game, but i did expect our defense to play much better than they did.
Mills is going to have a great career. He's just a frosh and made huge plays all night.
I would assume both teams had massive yardage as Russell County made big plays, which i said in the prediction thread we had to stop or we would lose, and we started at our twenty all night and drove it all the was down to the redzone atleast 7 or 8 times.
Mann looked very polished at QB for Russell. Made smart choices all night and didnt turn the ball over. Ysidro for Whitley is still growing into his own. He's still got a lot of learning to do when it comes to the passing game and still needs to read the defense better.
All in all, im not to dissapointed in our performance. I think other than Bell and Boyle, Russell county is the best team we will play all year. Great learning experience for us, and now that the first game jitters are out of the way we can move forward.

118 yards and 3 touchdowns

Britt played very little in the 1st half

It definitely could have been worse considering Russell Co. could have easily scored on the last possession from the 3 yard line, I think that's what he was referring to.

Mills will be a good player, but what a lot of people have to understand is this is still a young team. We would pass the ball if we could. Im not disagreeing with you there. I would assume the yardage totals were about identical, if not in favor of Whitley. Big plays killed us and we will adjust.
IMO, we wont face a team nearly as good in our region, and that includes Harlan County. 3-7 is a possibility, with the schedule being the way it is, but i can see a 5-5 year or 6-4. These game will get us ready for the playoffs as were more experienced than we were last year.
It was 28-14 with 3 minutes left in the third with Whitley around Russell's 35 and driving, but as i said, a few stupid plays and penalties stopped that and sealed our fate.
These were a two good years, and after this year Russell will no longer be on the schedule. Good luck to you guys as the season progresses. If Russell County ever had a chance at an upset in the playoffs it would be this year.

Home is a great place to be and early was a difference in last years game, and it could make a huge difference this Friday night.

RIUTG,
Britt was coming out after two plays to take oxygen and catch his breath. The first 14 points were scored without him on the field. He did come back and play more during the 3rd and 4th, but was out of the game far more than the staff wanted. I think this worked out well for the team as a whole, because they learned they can be effective without him. WC did start a comeback, and I agree on the play calling, but Russell Co could have easily punched in the last score, and had sub'd in D-line early in the 4th.

Great game for the Lakers! They played very hard for four quarters! Great to see Fletcher have such a good game. Nick had some amazing runs even though he was fighting illness. Please keep our db Densely Alcorn in your prayers he broke his leg and hip after making a terrific interception and return. Densely was a senior who was playing only his second varsity football game.

The denzel kid didnt look like he had got hurt that bad, but when it took them a while on the field, i knew something was up.
Sad to hear it will end his high school career.

Sadly, I can understand sinus flare-ups in Russell County. I lived in the Union Chapel area for 25 months and had 3 sinus infections and had to start taking two daily sinus medicines. Before that, I lived 22 years without even having one. :Sad04:
I hope and am sure that he will be fine for the next game.

Yeah, He just couldn't catch his breath. It's very seldom that Britts not in the game for almost every offensive snap. And he was in for probably less than half of the ones in the first. I think he actually was in during the second score. But was out during a few of the scores.
I think the lakers came out at half thinking the game was well in hand. So, why take the punishment from Bryant. Suddenly he began getting 6-7 yards on every carry. This was what started the run Whitley had. The score got cut to 28-14 and then Whitley got a defensive stop. This got their attention, and they once again took control of the game. To score 49 in a game where the clock didn't really stop too much was pretty impressive. I think this Laker team is a much better team than last season.....time will tell.
WC has some ballers on the team. They will get so much better if the staff adjusts the style a bit to suit their speed.

I really believe that Whitley can have a very good year. At the end of the season this win will look even better for the Lakers. By the way..I loved your stadium. What a great place to watch a game! Good Luck to the Colonels the rest of the season!

What is the reason that you see that Whitley is not able to throw the football? How did Boston Bryant do last night?

Wow! Were you even at the game? If the Whitley County coaches make the right adjustments on defense, then I would not want to face this team. And really considering: 1) this was Whitley's first game. 2) the defense had to face a solid mature offense in Russell County 3) Russell County already had one game under their belts 4) Russell County's first game was also an away game 5) Whitley had to face a team with really good speed at several positions 6) defense could not key on just one player 7) had to face a very balanced offensive attack. Considering all this, Whitley's first defensive effort had difficulties embedded everywhere, but WHITLEY'S DEFENSE DID VERY GOOD FOR 3QUARTERS! Now the offense of Whitley is tremendous! Yes, play calling at times, was questionable but this was the first game and Russell County has a very good defense. Whitley also shot themselves in the foot with multiple bad snaps, turnovers, and mishandling of the football (also can be attributed to first game and jitters caused by a first game). Now the biggest problem for the Whitley County offense was something that they had no control over -HOW DEPRESSING TO FACE 80 PLUS YARDS ON EVERY OFFENSIVE DRIVE OF YOUR OPENING GAME OF THE SEASON AGAINST A VERY GOOD DEFENSE THAT HAS AN ADVANTAGE OF ONE GAME PLAYED! Runitupthegut said it right and the kicker for Russell County should have the game ball and be named THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER. Gentlemen that situation would be very depressing on an offense in your first home game. Whitley will be fine and very dangerous and fun to watch this year......this game had "trap" written all over it for an opening game.
08-25-2012, 11:52 AM
This game was not a "trap" game. Russell Co. was just flat out the better team. Whitley Co is a solid hard hitting team, but as I have said many times on here, with the offense that Whitley runs they are one offensive penalty or one loss of yardage play away from punting. Just way too one dimensional for 5A football. They can string together 4 or 5 first downs and then a motion flag kills their offense. Just cant overcome the 3rd and long situations.

Is the rule if you do not play in week 0 you get two scrimmages? If that is true I do not think being the first game should matter this much. If you play in week one i think you get 1 scrimmage. I do agree with you that Whitley will be fine. I think they have the capability of beating any team in their district. Russell is good, and is one of the better teams on Whitley's schedule. I would not call it a trap game, but it definetly was a tough team to play for the first game. What class is Russell Co?
08-25-2012, 12:21 PM
Guess it goes to show how people can watch a game and come out with drastically different opinions. I saw a very good team that has a young quarterback working extremely hard to give a Russell County team all they wanted for 3 quarters. Keep your heads up Whitlley and don't let the nay Sayers bother you. With a little more work and experience you boys are going to give all teams fits!

You are a Whitley fan so you will see the game more in Whitley's favor. I have noone on either team, was just there because this was best game in the area last night and i'm just calling it as I see it. Whitley has some talent and they will flat out hit you, but Russell Co was the far superior team last night

I never once said that I was a Whitley fan, friend. I am not, as a matter of fact, therefore I can once again say that with a very young quarterback, Whitley was very impressive to me. Maybe it is just that I have no bias against Whitley or their coaches.

I wouldn't call Whitley a highly rated team, but I think this team will be fine in thier district. They have a shot at winning their district, but they are probably not the district favorite. I see them as a physical team that nobody will enjoy playing. What did you see last night that makes you think they are overated?
08-25-2012, 01:02 PM
I can't say this enough....to play a good team that has already played a game puts one behind to start , but, for a team to have to start on offense every possession where Whitley had to start is extremely tough!
