Protest leads to Belfry win
#1
PAINTSVILLE, Ky. - When Sunday afternoon's 11/12-year-old Little League state tournament game ended, the Belfry All-Stars were on the losing side of a 7-6 score on the new score board at Paul B. Hall Field.

However, the Belfry coaches found a win in the score book.
Wayne County, who rocked Paintsville 11-2 the day before, failed to make sure every member on the roster had their at-bat in the 5-1/2 inning game.

After the call was made to Little League's Central Region office, Belfry was declared a 6-0 winner over Wayne County. Both teams sit 1-1 with a game left in pool play.

Belfry, which was shutout by Owensboro Southern on Saturday, led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the second. Gary Runyon doubled early and drove in a couple of runs and Preston Young followed up with a home run shot that bounced off the center field scoreboard, which was installed earlier this season.

Wayne County scored on a passed ball in the bottom half of the inning to trail by three runs.

Belfry's Tyler Williams scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third and Keegan Fields' RBI ground-out plated Jeremy Workman for a 6-1 lead.

Wayne County got moving in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on a couple of Belfry errors and mounting a six run rally to take a one-run lead. Both defenses held until the end of the game with Wayne County taking the 7-6 advantage.

In Pool B play, Owensboro Southern leads the four teams with a 2-0 record. Paintsville is 0-2. Wayne County and Owensboro square off Monday at 3 p.m. with Belfry and Paintsville battling at 7 p.m.

A win for Owensboro would give them the top seed and a win for Belfry would give them the two seed to advance to Tuesday's single-elimination round.

However, a win for Wayne County and Paintsville would tie Wayne County and Owensboro with 2-1 records, moving them to the final round.

Pool B's number-one seed with take on Pool A's number-two seed Tuesday at 8 p.m. Pool B's number-two seed will take on Pool A's number one seed at 6 p.m.

The 11/12-year-old state championship game is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.

I agree, but congrats to the Belfry staff for making sure everyone plays by the same rules. They would have done the same to Belfry had the tables been turned.

The rules in LL have been clear forever. Everyone must hit at least once. All coaches know it. Congrats Belfry!!

And if the kid had got his turn at bat...theres no way to know what the score would have been at that point. He could have scored just like his team mate who would have took his place on the bench OR he could have struck out or got out after a hit. The score may not have been 7--6 had he had his turn at bat. We'll never know.

Kinda hard for Belfrey to do that when they only brought TEN players and only have to make ONE sub. But, that's their choice. Non the less WC Coaches srewed up. Bad thing was the kid was on deck.

Belfry Did Not "Choose" to bring 10 players, there were 12 picked. We thought we were going to have to play with 9. It comes down to kids/parents having the heart, the want to. But it dont matter if you bring 9 or 15, you have to play them all. and about the kid being on deck...wait till its over to put your sub in? anything can happen..

Rules are Rules and will be followed! All team managers were informed of the mandatory play provision and the penalty for violation of it. There are times when having 14 players verses 9 (10) players becomes a problem (substituting) but the reverse can also be a problem (team electing to have only 9 and getting a player injuried or ejected would loose by forfiet) as per rule Little League does not allow a game to continue with less than 9 players.
