Pikeville the better team. They better fix their special teams though or it will cost them.

Can't wait to see the highlights from this one. Pikeville was definitely the better team. However, we have to come up with defensive adjustments quicker in some situations rather than waiting until halftime, fix special teams, and learn that we can't always rely on catching lightning in a bottle in the 2nd half. Hazard's loss of composure helped us tons tonight, that won't happen as much later in the season. I know it sounds strange, considering they gave up 50 points, but I was impressed with how well the D laid the wood tonight and came up big with forced turnovers.

Congrats to Pikeville on a very good game. Hazard has nothing to hang their heads about because from an outsider looking in neither team was head and shoulders better then the other. I think Hazard has the most youth and the future looks bright. If they can fix some tackling issues and get a little better rythm between the QB and receivers they will give any 1a team in the east fits come playoff time.
Here is the good news, you have a coaching staff who are tried and tested and will get this team to where by playoff time they will look like a different team. You don't get to and win a championship over a Mayfield team by pure luck. This coaching staff knows what they are doing. Pay no attention to the score of this game because if both teams meet again it could go either way.

Well, this game raised more questions for me than it provided answers. When I saw Pikeville was up 56-28 I thought..."Pikeville was alot better at the end of the year last ear than many thought". Then I see Hazard rattle off 28 unanswered points. Though Pville had some defensive scores, its Hard to believe that there was much defense played in regaurds to making stops. I'd like to see some stats. Are these two teams defensively that weak? Was this a fluke game that if they played 10 times itd always end with a basketball score? Allt to think about all across the top tier in 1A.
Raceland played hard w 4A Ashland and shot themselves in the foot w fumbles and a blown 1st and goal that they couldnt Punch in. Losing 35-34 in OT
Russellville defeated Ft Campbell by a few less than Mayfield did.
Beechwood defeated a 6A Lima, OH team
Mayfield beat 6A McCracken Co 35-34
And this game here. What does it tell me?
When the polls come out, I feel:
Mayfield seems to still be the clear cut number 1.
Beechwood takes no 2 spot due to defeating a larger OH team.
Russellville maintains a firm grasp on number 3, but begins the discussion of if the r the number 2 team.
Even though having Lossed to Ashland, Raceland's defense was able to stop a RB that put up 236 yds on NCC, only allowing 3 relatively busted tds to be scored and their offense had 2 100 yd rushers and another two go for 50 and 75 and a qb throw for over 100 yds and gets them to the no 2 spot.
Fairview drops to 5 with a less than impressive performance against East Carter(i refer to to the unimpressive Raceland win over East as well...oHne common circumstance there)
And Hazard/Pikeville's scoring shows they r both more explosive than last year, but the defenses, may be more ball hawking, but lack the ability to stop a team from driving up and down the field. And tie them up at number 6
Williamsburg still has their game to prove...they go to 7. And the rest are left to fight amongst themselves.
Week 2 1A evaluation...Mayfields still got a grasp on 1A. Russellville and Beechwood lay out their notice of relevance as possible teams to dethrown them. Can Raceland ever win the big game...this team seems to have the ability(Ashlands numbers wore them down). The Pike County Bowl left us all scratching our heads. Fairviews line IS HUGE but seemed slow and may not be what we thought they were....and we STILL do not know if Williamsburg ca break the cycle against a quality team.

I think we will know if Fairview is what we thought they were after friday 9/6.
We could also figure out that Lawrence County aint what we think they are. All I know is I will be at the game with my popcorn and having a blast watching some good football in the September Fest Bowl.

I do however believe that this week 1A got alot more iteresting.
Raceland defense impressed me. And in many post(though i am a huge Raceland supporter, alum, and former player) i am waiting to see them get over the hump and wont be a believer to they do), their defense is BIG upfront and Risner is a beast. The kid is 6'1 285lbs and nearly beat Quiten Baker to to Edge from his DE spot every time the kid touched the ball. Cery tough and hard hitting defense. They just have some things to shore up offensively.
This game showed the ability to over come(a staple of a champ caliber team) and showed pikeville has the ability to score in many ways. Not just offensively.
Fairview may not be as good as we anticipated. While they r big upfront, their line seemed slow.
The race for the crown in the little old 1A got alot tighter this week. Still think u will see
1. Mayfield
2. Bwood
3. Rville
4. raceland
5. Fairview
6. Pikeville/Hazard
7. Pikeville/Hazard
8. Williamsburg...then everyone else. I think even after mayfield the west is still 2 tds better than the best from the east. But things got a heck of a whole lot more intersting thas for sure.

Was in attendance for this game and watched every second of it. Hazard is the better team in my opinion, no question. Several fumbles costed them big time, & the bad thing is big hits wasn't even the cause of them. Being careless with the ball is a big reason why hazard lost this game. Fumbled once on the 4 yard line which resulted in a 96 yard scoop and score. Fumbled once inside the 20 on a big break away run, & fumbled another time. Threw a interception on about the 30 which resulted in a 70 yard pick 6 on a very poor thrown ball. Props to the Pikeville D on capitalizing on all of the turnovers. Another BIG issue which hurt hazard was penalties. Several dumb penalties helped Pikeville win this game. One moved the ball from the 45 to the 10 yard line. Not sure of it was pikevilles game plan to kill the clock in the first half or not but they did a good job of it either way. It took Pikeville 11:24 to score and the other 36 seconds hazard scored. Hazard has a very dangerous offense and can strike out of nowhere. #8 running back for Hazard whoever he is, is a flat out grown man and ran all over the panthers and when I say over I mean OVER. Trucking people left and right but he must have made it his mission to fumble the ball on huge gains cause that's what he done the whole game. I believe I heard someone say he is just a junior. Does anyone know I he's getting recruited? Hazards QB is just a freshman and will of course make mistakes as he did in this game but I'm sure will be a dandy in a few years. Hazards tight end and slot at times was a monster I think I heard that his name was Hudson, had some very impressive plays including one right before half time when he rose over 3 panthers for a tremendous catch which resulted in a touch down. Hazards Defense could use some work. As the game progressed I began to notice that there might have been one or two players that played on both sides of the ball. This is high school football, not Division 1 or NFL, get some of your studs on offense out there on D like #8 and the Hudson boy and it could make a world of difference for your Defense & make it alot easier on your offense. If hazard took care of the ball and didn't get so many stupid penalties called on them and play some D with your best athletes and this game could've got UGLY. Hazard dominated upfront. Their line played very well. Also had a much better special teams than Pikeville as someone mentioned above. Hazard makes these fixes and this game is an easy win. Could see a rematch of this later this year.
If Pikeville truly wants to contend for a state title this year like i thought the would they better get their Defense in check. To many wide open holes to run through for big gains. To many easy passes completed. Their corners are soft as butter except for when they have to make a play on the ball. Estep is a good safety who don't care to hit. Props to him for sticking his nose in their when big #8 was going full speed at him. Their corners could use some lessons from him. Pikevilles line was way better last year, don't really know what happen there. Hazard dominated them all game long. Better get them in check also to open up some holes for Chase Hall to run through to make some and if they want to win this year. Hall played well and had some good runs when needed. Estep was clearly the MVP and best player for Pikeville on both sides of the ball IMO. Take him out of this game and the panthers are hurting. Made several HUGE plays on offense and that 96 yard scoop and score on defense as well as some big time tackles that other wise would've resulted in touch downs. Pikevilles line backers wanted no part of #8 tonight as he embarrassed them several times. Estep is a very solid player on both sides of the ball and showed up big time for the panthers on both sides tonight. Pikeville needs to fix several things on defense and get their o line back on track before there should ever be any conversation about contending for a state championship. But at the end of the day I'm like anyone else. A win is a win no matter what. No excuses. Congrats Pikeville!

Defense is Pikevile's and Hazards achillies. I thought Hazard would play better D. Turns out these two teams need to learn how to stop the ball...Defense wins championships!

Way to go Pikeville. Hope to see more and more wins like this one.
09-01-2013, 08:05 AM
Defense is Pikeville's major question at this point. I was not in attendance for this game but I watched them play at Prestonsburg last week. If Prestonsburg would have continued to pound the ball on the ground they put that game away in the first half.
09-01-2013, 08:15 AM
I haven't seen a score like that since state game with male and trinity I think it was years ago. Defense wins championships. These two will work that out I would assume. I just don't know what to take from this other than they need some d. Or maybe they need to print up some shirts that say "Where's the D?".

Don't really think Coach Dixon showed what he could do on defense. He was
playing a very loose laidback defense vs. a primarily run oriented team.
Dixon will beat Pikeville when it counts. Jones and Arnett could
score at will. When Jones dots the I Pikeville got out of the way. Pikeville
does have a nice team though but I think Dixon will take care of them
When it counts the most.
Chris Hudson should be thrown to 10 times a game or let him carry
the ball some at tailback. Not to many guys want to go head to head with a
6'7-250 tailback. The guy has awesome speed. D1 receiver if he wants to be. Justin Johnson from Perry Central would been just like Hudson if he'd put the pads on.

:dontthink All the respect in the world for Mayfield and Beechwood but if any of you think Frankfort is not a top five your delusional. Getting beat by Beechwood in the playoffs last year doesn't mean any of the east is even close. Come play some intercity schools and you'll find out real quick your speedsters aren't really all that.

Frankfort the center of the HOOD. You must of smoked one of those infamous hood blunts.

Sounds like a wild game. It will be interesting to see how these two teams progress. Scoring that many points on Hazard is never an easy task.

The last few minutes were wild, mainly due to Hazard executing MUCH better than Pikeville did on special teams. Pikeville did well, Hazard did well. Both teams have issues to fix. Playing good teams exposes your weaknesses and allows you to get better. Anyone remember the early season Raceland-Pikeville game last year? Yeah. How did that work out for Raceland when it really mattered? I have no doubt Pikevilke has a top notch staff and will make the needed adjustments to get better, because they certainly have the players to do it with. Austin Black played like a MAN in the 2nd half, saw many times he took on #8 mostly by himself. The LB's were not intimidated, to be sure.
Main thing is, I don't get how you can say Hazard was obviously the better team. They were not. The scoreboard says so. They are a team Pikeville has much respect for, and they HAVE been the better team the last few years. But tonight, Pikeville was better. Period.

Pikeville showed they have a grind it out offense and can take time off the clock before punching it in.

Austin Black # 22 for Pikeville ran the ball hard when giving the ball and he reminded me of a hard nose runner Pikeville had a few years ago in the name of Harmon. Harmon liked contanct and had power to run you over and go by you.

Rock, that has got to be the craziest thing I heard all day. The Hazard coaching staff lost this game because they didn't want to tip their hat that they have a defense. Maybe it was because Pikeville didn't want to tip their hat that they could score, oh sorry that cat was let out of the bag.
