Even in 3a Boyle is still going to have Belfry to contend with. Don't think it's going to be as easy as you think it will be. 3a is still going to have power house teams in Lou central belfry don't count your chickens before they hatch just yet.

Boyle won't be 3a until 2015. Also Chuck didn't win state with every team he coached. Rebels need to temper themselves a little. Larry French is a very good coach. Chuck will be successful but lets be a little realistic.

I would not count the chicks yet.

Considering they'll mosy likely be battling Lex Cath, Central, Tilghman, and other just in the west makes it hard for me to believe anybody will be a "power".
Not to mention the East will also be very good.
3A is where the fun football will be in 2015.

Expectations are going to be high at Boyle County, as it should be. Chuck Smith doesn't guarantee you anything except hard work. You will work hard for him. Whatever happens on the field is yet to be seen. Simmet down Sawmill, I love your enthusiasm but it's way too early.

Belfry is going to be very, very stout the next 4 years and over the past decade would have went toe to toe with Boyle and IMO won the majority of the matchups....
Central will be back as well and the same could be said for them over the past 6 or 7 years.
With Coach Smith back though there is no doubt the Boyle County program will once again ascend to elite status... but to assume they are about to breeze through 3A..especially the first couple years...may be a dangerous assumption.
Remember when Bell County moved to 3A from 4A everyone expected them to become the dominant team (especially after they went toe to toe with Boyle for a few years), but since joining 3A the Bobcats haven't made it out of the Regionals. Ft. Campbell was also expected to become a dominant team after winning several 2A Titles and since moving up I wouldn't even consider them a consistent Top 10 program in 3A.

How funny would it be if Boyle won state this year!

Ah Sawmill, at it again huh?

I know it's not likely but you have to admit it would be something special to see..

EKU you know what they say about opinions, Boyle and Belfry both have had some good teams over the past 10 years with both winning multiple state titles, but with Belfry always being so one dimensional and Boyle year in and year out having one of the best run defenses in the state I would have to lean the other way.

I thought all mountains teams are one dimensional offense. Run heavy. Have not seen a mountain team that are pass happy. Have you Jack?

HAHA I agree.. the delta isn't very far either way one chooses to view it with their respectively colored glasses. But with regards to that Bell County and their one dimensional offense equated themselves pretty well against the better Boyle teams of the past 6 or 7 years as well.
Belfry's defense typically isn't too shabby as well and these next four years will feature the most "talented" roster Belfry may have ever had. I for one would absolutely love to see this grow into a nice little rivalry. Always respected and followed the Rebel program and like their fanbase.

I agree I loved the Boyle and Bell county games it was a heated but short lived rivalry and welcome the possibility of seeing Belfry or Bell every year in the playoffs I love the passion that both fan bases have, this type of competition is what makes high school football one of my favorite sports it's gonna be a lot of fun.

So if we were to move Lex Cath to eastern KY would that slow down their pass happy offense?

Its almost as if weve only got two classes once this begins.
Theres a lot of really good teams in 3A.
It will definitely be the most exciting class in KY high school football.
Personally, to me it wont seem like theres 6 classes when you take a look at how good 3A will be.

As long as our one dimensional offense can get us into FG range! We're okay with winning games 3-0!
02-04-2014, 08:45 AM
I'll be happy to see Boyle's offense go back to being more dynamic as it used to be under Smith. I loved what Larry French did there, but I always thought they relied too heavily on the run. Back in the day, Boyle's passing attack was a thing of beauty.

I doubt it! Cause mountain teams would not know how to defend a spread offense. Just ask Johnson Central who got trottled by a spead offense of Cov Cath. Just ask Bell Co in the past when they played Lex Cath. Whats the result of those games? How about Russell Co? They could not defend it either. Boyle Co can, they see enough of Lex Cath to know how to defend quick, fast, athletic kids.

There's a couple of pass-happy mountain teams... they're not very good. No surprise.

Let me re- phase that before I ticked off some folks. Most teams from the mountain can not stop a spead offense. Not all:thanks:

Yes it was.

Back in Chucks first tenure I would say Boyle was about 60% pass and 40% run during French's tenure I'd say Boyle was about 70% run and 30% pass which in my opinion makes an offense a whole lot easier to defend. I hope we see the offense open up more, but I'm not sure what we will see if Mason remains OC.

Josiah is going to really shine under Smith

02-04-2014, 08:31 PM
Brandon Smiths sophomore year he attempted 249 passes completed 142 with 11 ints his main target was Jacob Tamme he caught 46 passes for 797 yards and 13 touchdowns in 15 games
Josiah Robbins sophomore year he attempted 161 completed 93 with 5 ints his main target was Joe Shewmaker 26 receptions 387 yards and 5 touchdowns in 12 games
No disrespect to Joe Shewmaker but he ain't no Jacob Tamme! It would be awesome to see what Josiah could do with the skilled kids we had!!! Boyles best skilled kids were their running backs and QB last year!

Those stats are straight from a KHSAA web site! Looking back at the stats Boyle was about 60% run and 40% pass from 1999-2004 from 2008-2013 Boyle was 65% run and 35% pass! Just looking at the stats on the KHSAA web site! In 1997-1998 looks like Boyle was 60% pass and 40% run however those were the most disappointing years under Coach Smith second round upset by Bourbon in 1997 and second round loss to Lexington Catholic in 1998! I guess the coaches decided to that they would have to run the ball or be as balanced as they could to win a state championship! And the talent level is not close to what it was from 1999-2004 the closest to that talent level that coach French had was 2008-2010!

There has been absolutely nothing wrong with Boyle Offense over the past seasons. They play to their strengths. Stevie Wonder could see that w/o knowing any stats. Don't Hate the playa hate the game. Go Rebs
