Harlan "CITY" has had a better than expected turnout. After the 2014 season we will own district 7. We will be young this coming year but watch out after 2014!

Harlan has usually produced a decent 1A team. JB is an old school coach.

This deal isn't going to work out for Williamsburg 64...you will have to find a new 5 or 10 teams...

I mean, they're not a Phelps or Jenkins by any means. Surely no Pikeville or Hazard, but for Harlan County taking any talent, they'll do a good job.
07-17-2014, 09:48 PM
Agreed again...not a South Floyd either although HDE says Hazard sees no difference.

Good to see Coach Donahue having some athletes coming through. Great coach and man.

Heard they will be playing bunch of frosh and sophs this yr. Sounds like they may take their licks again this yr but seem to be on the rebound after that

Hopeful for a Harlan resurgence but far from confident right now.
Spring roster on KHSAA site showed only six juniors and seniors combined, with seven other sophomores. Have not heard of a huge freshman class coming in. Even if those 13 returning are great, fatigue and injuries week to week will make it very hard to compete weekly.
Maybe reducing the schedule difficulty in the next cycle (2014-15) and losing Hazard in the district will help, and it would also help to get all the available athletes to play. There is only one returning basketball player, for example, playing football. Adding those extra 12-14 athletes to the football team would give JB the 25-30 or so players and talent he usually has to work with.
That said, outside of Middlesboro, which should be really good, Harlan could have a competitive chance to win four of its first five games to open the season, and that would really rebuild some excitement.

I think that's a very accurate breakdown.
They had a lot of seniors the past two years and the junior high teams have been average at best.
It will take some time.

We will be fine. We might not be world beaters although when Hazard leaves District 7 we will own that district. Harlan will soon be the king of football in this county! HC is on the down hill slide. Hazard is leaving our district and Highlands and Cov Catholic is entering 5a. Can you say goodbye HCHS!
07-19-2014, 08:34 PM
That will bring a lot of revenue to both programs if that means they are going to start playing every year.
HCHS doesn't have to worry about Highlands or Covington Catholic unless they win a regional championship. That's a pretty big accomplishment, so it's a good problem to have.

wishful thinking on your part.

Harlan County has athletes everywhere. However, they are having a problem keeping all of them out. The last two years this is starting to surface.

You have to be either 12 or on crack. Post like this is exactly what fuel the flames between these two districts. If you think Harlan is on the uprise that's great! I hope they are. In fact, probably no one in Harlan County would rather see it than me. But this other garbage about owning the county is unnecessary. How about winning just one district and regional championship before getting your boast on.

from the talk on here i expect a 1 A team to win the Super Bowl this year.

These two programs, families, parents, players, etc. need to pull together and stop this junk talking nonsense. We are one county and one community. We're family, friends and competitors although we compete on different levels. Other than girls basketball, right now the comparison is very one sided. What each school should do is compete in their element. Understanding that football, basketball, baseball, and softball are all different, we should compete in the other three and let football take its course. But we should enjoy the competition and leave friends.
07-21-2014, 02:34 PM
No matter how you put it there bear paw but Harlan County football will start to decline and our program will be on the rise. We have the best coach and he will get us back to competing for district championships.

Does Harlan still need a 10th game?

Sports lover please stop, stirring up mud. The city will be down this year. We have good kids, just young and inexperienced. The next two years should be better with the team being much more competitive. HC is an established program with tons of success and I expect them to be just as successful this year. Great coachs and players. I'm particularly partial to their OL. These are just great kids. Trying to compare HC to Harlan City is comparing apples and oranges. Let's support both teams and hope for success, making our communities proud. I for one would love to see HC playing in Bowling Green. In closing, I do think Harlan City will be a competitive team in the next couple of years, with a realistic chance at making some noise in the district, Go Big Green & Go Black Bears. But most important, be proud people of Harlan County, support each other, and let's hold our heads high.

I totally agree war horse. HC will continue to be a regional contender and Harlan Ind sounds like they could be starting to bounce back. we all just need to be supportive of both programs.

I am just sick and tired of the County being known as the sports school. We are not only a sports school but we also teach our kids in the classroom. Go Dragon's!!!

They may need to go back over where the apostrophes go, or don't, on Dragons.
