GRAYSON With its first district title in school history on the line, Greenup County turned to “The Franchise.”
Senior Brody Shoupe tallied a hat trick to propel the Musketeers to a 5-0 win over West Carter for the 62nd District title on Thursday night at the East Carter Soccer Complex.
“I call him ‘the franchise,’” Greenup County coach Andy Zabrieszack said. “… That kid knows how to lead our team. He does a lot of great things for us and he is a great captain.”
Shoupe can certainly stir the pot for Greenup County offense with his speed and athleticism. The script could not have been written any better for the midfielder in his final district game.
“It feels good,” Shoupe said. “I felt that way yesterday just before the game (with Morgan County). It’s just preparation. When you wake up in the morning, it’s all a mindset. Tonight, the shots were falling. I was lucky enough to be that person.”
Both teams advance to the 16th Region Tournament at Ashland next week. The drawing will be held today.
It’s been quite a turnaround for the Musketeers’ program that had never advanced to the second week of the postseason until 2012. Greenup County achieved a region title that year in its first attempt and now will be making its third trip in four years.
“Now Greenup County is competitive every time we hit the field,” Zabrieszack said. “It’s a far cry from where we first started. … Our program has done a complete turnaround. We have a lot of support and that helps. Our parents, our volunteers, they help us a bunch.
“In the nine years that I have been here, we are a different team. Every year we can be more competitive and battle (for titles).”
