Letcher County Central Coaching Search
#1
Who will be taking over at LCC now that Holcomb has retired?
#2
This is a better job than Bell... who would have ever thought.
#3
Mike is not going to Bell Co.
#4
Is this confirmed?

sad but true.

I never thought I would agree with this statement. LCC has more talent than Bell at the moment. Their freshmen or sophomore (can't remember which one I'm recalling) group is pretty stout if I'm not mistaken.

Mike is retiring. Going Home to Breathitt.

Jr Mathews is one that will be considered. Heard they wanted to hire within county. A long waiting game I'm afraid!

I don't know if he will apply but former Cougar Matt Chandler would be a great hire! He is from Whitesburg played for LCC and collegiately at Kentucky Christian Univesity. He is passionate, young and one of the hardest working coaches I have ever been around. He has worked himself up the coaching ranks at Fairview, Rowan Co., Mongtgomery Co and Russell Co. He has been mentored and is connected with some of the finest coaches around. He had a tough year this year as OC at Russell County who is in serious rebuild mode....not his fault very young and inexperienced team..even in a tough year he was the first one in the office and last one out...very committed! As the varsity OC and JV head coach he led the JV Lakers to a conference championship. LCC would be hard pressed to find a more dedicated and knowledgable young coach around. I would imagine this would be his dream job and would be there for years building a program the community would be proud of.

If he applies LCC should take a serious look at this young up and coming coach. Be blessed!

Well it's a damn shame that money will certainly control this decision and anyone close to the situation knows who the coach is going to be.Why not go after Dudley or an up and Comer, all I'm saying people is the coaching change was basically already made when Letcher went to Harman county last year undefeated and made changes to play younger kids instead of trying to win the district .In my eyes Mike had already through in the towel then.......a shame.I was told that night that Mike was resighning and who the new coach would be and yes he is already on the staff! Don't drink the kool-aid folks
#11
How many coaches have they had in last 10 years
#12
LCC has had some of the best coaches this state has had to offer. Hillard Howard, Whitaker, Paul Rains, and Mike Holcomb. They can not seem to get things going. Their is a problem ,has anyone identified it? My first thought is hard to recruit to Whitesburg on a regular basis. Something else? I am listening.

Politics has always played a bad role at LCC. We could have had Cameron justice play basketball. This will be no different.

Dudley isn't leaving Taylor unless it's to finally call it a career. He's getting way too much money to stay in a place where their expectations aren't exactly that high.

But, as far as the LCC search, I think they'd really benefit from an outsider hire. I know a lot of people always think those guys will win and leave for a bigger job, but, honestly, that's the case at just about any school. There are, maybe, a handful of jobs in this state where there aren't any schools above you. And even then, there are probably some others still who could and would out-spend those schools.

Every AD always should have the fear that a "new guy" will leave for a better job, because unless you're at the 3 or 4 destinations jobs, the HC very well might leave for something else.

Get a new face who you believe will win. If he leaves, then do it again. Not every hire is a home run, and that goes for new names and established names as well.

Coach hiring isn't an exact science.

3 guys with state championships in that bunch. Maybe it just isn't in the cards for LCC to win in football.

Anna Craft doesn't make the decisions anymore. We will not pay a coach or give him no responsibilities like before. The SBDM council will pick the coach. The financial condition of our county does not allow for picking a coach that will have a significant effect on a few.

Different people making the decisions now.

Letcher has had some Great Coaches in past few years. Howard, Whitaker and Mike. Maybe they give a Young Coach a shot ???
#20
These guys are at the end of their careers..we need coaches that can be here for more than a couple years. BTW I loved Mike Holcomb and only wish him the best.

Some good points. How many head football coaches have been at their schools 10+ years? Continuity has a lot to do with success.

Location is another negative in the eyes of many for LCC, much like Bell.
#23
To me letcher not a better job than Bell Co.......Mike Whitaker assistant at Montgomery might take it.
#24
Do not think they will take Mike Whitaker back at lcc.

In todays world you wont hardly ever have a coach stay 10 years anywhere, you can give that idea up. Either they run a guy off or he gets out cause a number of things.

Will not occur.

i know people will argue each coach wouldn't leave.... But the very first names in order I would call:

1. Coach Dixon at Hazard. Proven winner and huge respect from the area. With Pikeville in his District, who knows maybe the allure of 5A football and a routinely easy District may entice him.

2. Wayne Mills. Chance to immediately get back on the sideline as the Head Coach. He has won before at a similar level at Knox Central.

3. Coach Ratliff at SV. Easy relocation and a guy who did pretty big things without a ton of athletic talent.

I would also be interested to see what a Brad Allen could do at a place that actually had a solid feeder system and good numbers.

All very sensible and well thought out ways to approach it. That probably means it will not go down that way.
#29
I don't think Dixon is going anywhere but maybe the other two might be a possibility. Does Hazard have any assistant coaches that might go for the job?
#30
I mean Letcher have any assistants?
