but there is no doubt about the PLAY of Russell..... And it was hard for any one with AA batteries this year to STOP the PLAY of Russell... and to think that a team that should have been playing with AAA batteries would be the STOP at the the end of the SONG and DANCE............. I am over it but this was too good to pass up.

The KHSAA would alow the asme thing to happen in any county and it was fair in its handling of this case IMO. Mercer earned the title by beating a very good Russell team. It sounds like instead of being classy losers the Russell followers are being sore-losers and that is unfortunate because they sure took the praise when they won the title, but cannot seem to take bad press well, but thats life and will not change the fact that they were second best this year, and there is nothing wrong with that IMO, it is just high school football!

Brahma Bull// The play on words was the key,,, over it,,, believe me.... Just getting ready for next year brother.. no hard feelings though,,,, we are a classy bunch of loosers.. we will take it too, eat crow when crow is to be eaten, hide our heads in the sand when the water runs dry and all that babble talk.... Yea no doubt about it we came up short in the end and turnovers lost the game for us, WE BEAT OURSELVES, no crying here........ dry it up and move on to next year.. brighter days ahead my friend, brighter days ahead......

Just curious about Estill on the list, what makes you think they can be a top 10 team next year???? It has been stated on some other threads that they have almost everyone back, but they only won 3 games last year. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the Neers do well, was just curious.

The KHSAA had only two choices to make with this situation: play in current class or play games and not compete for the title. The super for Mercer County really caused all of the stir by moving the consolidation to where the above choices were all that could be done because of scheduling(he knew what he was doing). This is a widely held opinion all around the state and not just in Russell. This was a hot discussion topic at the finals among many coaches.

I said it at the begining of the season that the KHSAA should have allowed them to play games but not compete for a title. This would have caused quite a bit of turmoil as well but would have been the most fair and just solution. IMO the KHSAA should have had the backbone to resist the trap that was laid out by the Mercer Co super.

Breathitt has to remember what it is like to play defense if they plan on winning anything IMO. Playing offense is eady, but playing defense is a bit harder because players have to be mentally tough and "want" to do it. Offense is fun and glamourous, but the defense will win a team the title when the offense struggles. Breathitt has forgotten how to mentally prepare and has had very poor defensive showings in the past several seasons. The defense last year was bad, but the game against Middlesboro was one of the worst games I had ever seen as far as stratagy and preparadness by a defense, and that falls on coach Chapman more than coach Holcomb IMO. If the Bobcats struggle for another season or two, I look for Chapman to be a head coach at another school.

I don't think any Russell followers will ever get "over it". I for one will not. And your comments about Russell followers is not unfortunate. It is all a part of having high expectations, a lot of pride in your programs, and never settling for second best.

Actually that was my view from the begining of the season and it has not changed. I congratulate Mercer/Harrodsburg on the state championship, but IMO it will always be tainted. Had Russell won it would have been a little easier to swallow. But that is still a bitter pill.
Ask most coaches and administrators around the state what they thought of the situation?
01-16-2007, 05:00 PM
Belfry, Somerset, Russell, SC, PT, Central, and Breathitt.

I have to disagree with that statement,, Yes everyone else that they played in AA would have continued to press the issue because it should have been them to play instead of Mercer. I can see the point about Russell but now everyone else has the icing on the cake that Mercer should not have played.. Like Devil68 said, ask other schools that played them and get their opionion. Asking Russell would only taint the outcome of your inquiry.
