Johnson Central vs. Greenup County (10/6)
#1
The Golden Eagles make the LONG trip up U.S. 23 North (to what feels like the end of the Earth) to play The Musketeers in a District contest.

Johnson Central is 6-0 overall & 2-0 in District play.
Greenup County is 5-2 overall & 2-0 in District play.

I've said it all season, Greenup County will be the 2nd place team this season in our District.

1st: JC
2nd: Greenup County
3rd: Ashland Blazer
4th: East Carter

*** It is worth noting, this game may be moved to Thursday night. Johnson County schools start fall break on the Friday of this game for the annual Apple Festival. If this game is on Friday night, Greenup County will miss out on a big gate from JC's fans. If the date is changed, I'll be sure to update the info. ***

They'll have a weak gate anyway from their fans either night.

Had three home games so far... the crowds have been very large.
The South Charleston, WV. game had a big JC crowd as well.

Can a Greenup County fan confirm or deny if their G logo and color scheme came from the Greenbay Packers?

Not trying to be funny, I really don't know the answer.

Greenup County was created from consolidation of Greenup High School (green and white), Mckell High School (blue and yellow), and Wurtland High School (black and red). They chose the color scheme incorporating all the schools forming Greenup County. Green from Greenup, yellow from Mckell, and black from Wurtland. Not sure about the G logo. Maybe an actual Greenup fan can tell you that.

Greenup County's last win against Ashland was 1999.

I will be shocked if the Musketeers defeat the Tomcats.

Greenup County Old Fashion Days typically dwindle the home crowd. Thursday would be a bigger crowd.

I think it will get ugly

It's too bad there's not a football game on Thursday night between the two high schools in Johnson County that would coincide with the Apple Festival........

Both teams could be playing in their home county in front of a major crowd, but instead, both teams are traveling North (Greenup County & Fairview) for what will probably be not the most competitive contests.

Greenup has the game against Ashland in the bag.

I know comparing scores isn't always accurate but Ashland beat Raceland 14-0 and Raceland beat Greenup 24-0 so just going off that I can't see Greenup beating Ashland this year.

Not to get off topic, but I wish they would bring back the Apple Bowl, Johnson Central vs Paintsville. As far as this game, I will state the obvious. Johnson Central is going into the game as the favorite. Can Greenup County win? Crazier things have happened, but it will be a tall order.

SLOW DOWN!!!!! We don't want that kind of talk on here.

The idea of the #1 team in 1A & the #1 team in 4A, in the same county, playing each other the night before the biggest festival in our county is crazy talk. It would only be the biggest game in the state this week, not to mention an insane gate.

One more outburst like that and you'll be looking at 30 day suspension without pay!!!!!!

I think GC can beat Ashland. If they do what we didn't do and that's tackle coburn. We had him in the backfield all night and never brought him down

Eagles all the way

Greenup County's field has been the site of two state records by former JC kicker & current Kentucky Wildcat, #91, Tyler Pack.

2013: Longest field goal - 60 yards.
2015: Longest punt - 89 yards.

As long as Jim Matney coaches Johnson Central, an annual Apple Bowl between one of the top 1A and top 4A teams would be a blowout game. It will be a sad day for JC football when a school with Paintsville's enrollment can field a team that can compete consistently with the Golden Eagles.

Coach Chirico has done an amazing job bringing the Tigers' football program from the edge of extinction to its current level, where they are consistently a top 5 1A team in the state. But a 5-to-1 enrollment advantage means that all else being equal, Paintsville would rarely win a game against Johnson Central. Paintsville dominated the Apple Bowl games for years but for most of that period, the Tigers held a huge coaching advantage over Johnson Central. Under Coach Bill Musick, the tide turned in JC's favor. Then, after three dark years of coaching mediocrity, Coach Matney wasting no time in making it clear that the Apple Bowl would not be a competitive match-up on his watch.

I hate that Paintsville holds a huge edge in the series with JC, but it would be better for both schools to play competitive games in the Apple Bowl in a double-header against schools closer to their own size. When and if the series finally resumes, it will mean that Matney is gone and JC's days as a state contender are over.

I think that JC will win with a running clock, but GC this may be the most competitive district game that the Golden Eagles will play. In the end, Johnson Central's size and depth will wear down the Muskateers.

Musketeer's offense is rolling right now. I smell a upset
#28
I believe there would be no game between Central vs Paintsville. I don't think it would be a running clock either. During Apple Day I wish the (2) teams could work a deal out like this

2018 Apple Day Week
Thursday or Friday Central vs Belfry
Thursday or Friday Paintsville vs Pikeville

2019
Pike Co Bowl
Friday or Saturday Belfry vs Central
Friday or Saturday Pikeville vs Paintsville
Apple Day Week
Thursday or Friday Central vs Ashland
Thursday or Friday Paintsville vs Raceland

I suggested this exact schedule earlier this year.... I think this would be AWESOME!

Anything in life is possible, but not likely in this case.

I've said for the past two seasons Greenup County is gonna beat Ashland for 2nd place in the district. After this game, I'll be pulling for them to beat the Tomcats.
