What America really thinks?
#1
I believe most Americans dont hate gays and are trying to be considerate of a very different kind of relationship between two people. At the same time I dont think the people of this country will ever elect a gay president. Its obvious the way straight people think, there is a long way to go for equality for someone who is gay.Does anyone think we would ever even elect someone to run for the presidency if we knew they were gay?
#2
As everyone probably knows I am one that supports Gay Rights and civil liberiterties among the gay community however I do think that you are correct in saying that our nation will never elect a President if we knew he was gay. My reason for agreeing with you is because slavery ended in the 1800's and blacks were given civil liberities in the mid-1900's I believe and we have yet to elect a black President. However, I do think it would be possible for individual states to elect Senators or Represenatitives that are gay, but yes I do agree with you in saying that we will probably never have an OPENLY gay President. Not in this decade at least.
#3
I say that not to encourage not vvoting for gays but an example of how americans feel deep down in their hearts.I believe this country will elect a black president.I just hope it is not just because he is black. We have had many black americans who would have made great presidents.I have also read where Blacks in this country get very upset when you bring them up in a debate over gays. They are offended by that.
#4
I apologize in talking about blacks and gays in the same sentence. If they get offended by it then what do the gay black individuals do?
#5
Thanks for being very civil and nice DT and not slamming me for seeing things maybe a little different than you.
#6
Hey there in no need in slamming you in having different opinions, this is a opinion based site and besides there's no need in putting others down for not seeing things exactly the way you see them, thats how you learn and grow as people.
#7
People never seem to back up and say,,,hey I was wrong.I have known people who were against people of color and to hear them apologise for this and ask for forgiveness and really be sincere is something that would being tears to anyones eyes.George Wallace was told to have done this.He supposedly went to an all black church and ask them to forgive him for all the many things he did against them.I hope he was sincere if this really happen.
#8
Yeah really. It seems to me that alot of people today have too much pride when it comes to admiting that they have been wrong and usually won't do it. I personally think it's horrible to have too much pride, for me there has to be a balance. I have alot of pride in what I do and who I am but I defintally will apologize or admit that I am wrong.

personally, i dont have anything against gays...this guy that sits at our lunch table (we're girls) is gay, and he is hilarious.

...i would vote for a homosexual president, assumming he or she was able to prove that they could effectively manage the country.

i think technically speaking, any minority group leader with the right background and morals (especially a gay) would be a good leader in the sense of getting things done, though maybe not so much in terms of international aspects.

my reasoning is that ok, take a gay, for example. (out of the closet)
all his life he has had to stand up for himself and what he believes in, and take so much trash from his peers, classmates, coworkers, etc. who are not openminded enough to coexist harmoniously with him. therefore, he will not back down on his word, and achieve what he sets his mind to accomplishing during his campaign/term. he wouldn't be phased or put down by other candidates taking advantage of him, and wouldn't not know how to deal with any scandals that surface about him.

on the flip-side, right now negotiating deals on oil prices with middle eastern countries like saudi arabia is crucial to our country's economy...
most traditional muslims (the predominant residents of the middle east) are strictly against gays....this might cause issues if lets say, saudi arabia's leader chose to cut off ties w/ america b/c of our gay president. that would cause the price of oil and gas to skyrocket, which would severely impact all levels of our society.
similarly, the president of our country needs to project a strong image of courage, dedication, fortitude, "doesnt take $hit from other countries", etc. i'm not saying all gays are the flamboyant drama queens that the media portrays them to be, but that is a typical stereotype associated with them.

personally, i feel if a woman or minority group representative wants to run for office, then more power to them. from what i've seen on tv, both hilary clinton and barak obama present themselves really well and come off as educated, informed, citizens....so if i were democratic and old enough to vote, i wouldn't have a problem supporting either of them.
however, i know enough people who are stuck in the mindset of "he wont win, he's black" or "shes a girl, i wouldnt vote for her.."
so as far as things actually play out, i guess we'll just have to wait and see.
#16
Yeah, right now the oil situtation is really crucial to our nation and our economy but I do hear alot of people with that mindset and it really ticks me off.
#17
Call me ignorant, call me stupid, call me one-track-minded, but i would NEVER vote for an openly homosexual president. It is wrong, and thats all there is to it.

I will not call you ignorant, stupid or one track minded for voicing your opinion.

Do you care to elaborate as to why it is so wrong. What does ones sexual orientation have to do with their ability to run a country?
#20
You would think people would want to vote for a someone who deserved to be President, no matter if they were gay or not. I know I would MUCH rather haev a openly gay President who knew hwat he was doing than have a straight one who didn't.

Picking a woman,,actually a Black woman like C.Rice was a terrible mistake. In dealing with the Muslims,,she has no respect from them,,she has been useless. They dont even respect their own woman. So picking a minority because their a minority is senseless to me.No pun intended.

right...
i see what youre saying.
what i meant was more like in terms of picking a minority who has diplomatic qualities and can get the support of enough people on key issues..
like if there is a caucasian male with a solid background and a good stance on issues running against ...umm i dunno, a lesbian, black female who is just counting on the "look at me im a woman, i support gays...and im african american" card to win, then by all means vote for the man.

Good post panthers with good points pal.

perosnally i wouldn't vote for it.. it's against everything i believe.. that's on a personal level. secondly I wouldn't do it, becuase i guess i am just conservative.. not all the way but mostly.. This country has gotten (in my opinion) a little too liberal. and i'm not goin to go into that right now..

but lastly, i don't think an openly gay person would become president for a good period of time.. because most of the country does have some conservative in them, and it's hard to see how the country would be handled..

however i do think we could possible see a black president or even a woman president in the near future..

Well Midee, it mostly has to do with my religious beliefs. I do believe that it is morally wrong to be a homosexual, and i do not want my country to be run by someone of that nature.

And I respect that reason. My feeling is that if the person is well qualified then they should be considered for the job regardless of their sexual orientation. Differing points of view are what makes the world go around.
