Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 70 Morehead State 65
#1
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State would cut a 16-point deficit down to as low as five, but ultimately fell to SIU Edwardsville 70-65 Saturday evening at Johnson Arena.

The Eagles kept the game close throughout most of the opening half, but allowed SIUE to close out the final 6:52 of the first on a 15-6 run and entered halftime trailing 41-27.

"We dug too big of a hole and couldn't get out of it," said head coach Preston Spradlin. "We let them take too many open (three-pointers) in the first half."

In the second half, SIUE would stretch the lead to 16 points, but the Eagles continued to battle. Junior guard A.J. Hicks knocked down a pair of free throws with 3:10 remaining to get the SIUE lead down to five. The Cougars extended the lead back to nine, which proved to be insurmountable.

Despite the loss, Spradlin was pleased with his team's fight.

"I was happy with our effort and intensity tonight," Spradlin said. "It was noticeably better than (last Thursday's 61-52 loss to Eastern Illinois)."

Four Eagles achieved double-figure scoring totals in the game. Lamontray Harris tied a game-high 16 points and collected nine rebounds. Hicks and Jordan Walker dropped in 14 apiece, and Djimon Henson had 11 points of his own.

Morehead State outrebounded SIUE 40-33, an effort that was spearheaded by 6-foot-7 forward Londell King. The sophomore pulled down 10 Cougar misses.

The loss drops the Eagles to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Next up, Morehead State will travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to take on the Southeast Missouri Redhawks at 8:30 p.m. ET.
