Just How Big Is Wal-Mart Anyway?
#1
Here's some interesting statistics on Wal-Mart.

1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.

2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer.

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.

8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy (including Winn-Dixie).

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.

11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal- Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion).

12. 90% of Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart

I won't say one way or anther about destroying america but I do know that there have been several local grocery stores and specialty shops go out of business shortly after all of our Wal marts opened up here. Out in the Summit area there were 2 that went out. My parents really have no other option as to where to shop. They have Wal mart and a save-a-lot and that's it.

Tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas to countries like Mexico and Indonesia due to Wal-Mart's price negotiating.

Wal-Mart is the biggest vendor in the world for most consumer goods. They force the manufacturers to lower their prices so low that in order for those companies to stay in business they have to move the jobs overseas to meet Wal-Marts purchase price.

They nearly destroyed Rubbermaid singlehandedly by using this practice. If it weren't for K-mart bailing Rubbermaid out they wouldn't be in business anylonger or their plants would have been moved over seas.

Since K-mart can't sell as much product as Wal-Mart they(Rubbermaid) still had to lay off thousands.

A jeans factory in Hopkinsville, Ky terminated thousands of jobs just a while back due to this type of price negotiation. Guess where those jobs went. Mexico.

They are terrible to business with also. Besides naming the price they are going to pay for your product, if it shows up late or early, the goods are rejected, costing the manufacturer additional freight charges.

Those are some big numbers I would have to say, and I live about 15 miles away from a Wal-Mart, lol.
#13
the majority of there workers are limited to less than 40 hours making them part time workers to keep from having to pay insurance and other benefits

LOL, Good one Tribe.

And you can ask any employee of Walmart and they will tell you that it has went all to hell since Sam Walton died! They will tell you that he was in it for the people and the customers and now it is all about the green!
#16
Oh yes, I live within 15 miles of two wal-marts.

The Fan Wrote:the majority of there workers are limited to less than 40 hours making them part time workers to keep from having to pay insurance and other benefits

Actually your math is wrong. At this time Wal-Mart's rate for full time vs. part time is around 65% full time and 35% part time. Another false statement is that only their full time associates receive health benefits. All associates, whether full time or part time, can become eligible for health benefits.

Some Wal-Mart employees get to stock shirts for 5-6 dollars per hour. Just like the ones they used to make for 10-12 dollars per hour.
You tell me, is Wal-MArt good for America? Every time they "roll back" prices they roll up another factory in America and ship the jobs to Mexico and Indonesia.
So keep shopping there and maybe you can work at a Wal-Mart too.

People aren't going to stop shopping at Wal-Mart just because they send jobs overseas. The people who MAY stop won't make enough difference to do anything anyway. People shop at Wal-Mart because that is what they can afford. I'm not going to pay more than I have to for stuff.

That's right you will.
So will most others.
It's this type of "me first" or "what's in it for me?" attitude that Wal-Mart prey's upon.

It's a perfect business model. But is it good for America?

I hate that jobs that Americans could have are shipped overseas. I hate it that mom and pop business are ran out BUT I know that people won't pay more than they have to for goods. I don't have the extra money to do it. If people boycotted Wal-Mart they would still make enough money to not even feel it.

So your solution is to submitt? I thought today's younger generation was supposed to be the "Do something about it generation".

This is very disheartening.

People talk about how wal-mart is destroying america but what if wal-mart left the u.s those people was go crazy they would lose it becuase everybody shops at wal-mart..
#24
What are you going to do about it? Like tribe said it wouldnt even be noticed if the few that dont agree stop shopping there. Heck they are building one here in Louisa as we speak and I cant wait for it to open. Because the one store we do have you pay say 30 dollars for a DVD and goto walmart and get if for 19. So what you going to do pay 30 for it or 19. Thats what I thought. The people are out to save every dime they can, and I for one will.

When I was in high school I lived like an hour away and now I live like 5 minutes away from Wal-Mart and it doesn't bother me at all that it's there. I f-n LOVE Wal-Mart. I'm there at least once a day whether I am buying stuff or I'm there with friends...
I'm with tribe and everyone on saying that even if people boycotted WalMart and refused to shop the stores in our region they would make enough money to cover it at all the other stores to not even feel it. It does bring some jobs into the area that once weren't there but it also put's other small business owners out of a job. As far as I concerned if Wal-Mart ever left I think I would probably be one of the ones that would go insane, i get EVERYTHING at Wal-Mart...including my groceries. I don't get clothes from there but I do buy bikinis there when they have some I like...

I'm not saying that Wal-MArt is destroying little mom and pop 5 and dime stores in the old downtown areas. Wal-MArt is destroying American factories, and that affects thousands of families.

Another myth that Wal-MArt has conned the "Wal-MArt Generation", into believing is that Wal-Mart has everything cheaper than everyone else. Wrong!

They use a "Bait and Switch" technique that suckers people right into the trap.

The display item, for instance is a 19 inch color TV for 89 dollars. WOW That's Cheap!

So you go and check out the TV in the department. Only to find they have all these other TV's at what seems to be a bargain. But wait,.... not so fast my friend. These "other TV's are most times marked up and not down. You see, because; "You fell for it", their brilliant plan has worked.
Now, you leave Wal-Mart with a 25 inch flat screen for 218 dollars thinking you got a deal!!! Yipeee!!!!.

Sorry Charlie...
You just spent 218 bucks for the same TV that Kmart has for $198 dollars. Confusederved:

So you tell me who wins? The consumer or Wal-Mart.... Let this soak in and fester a bit, then respond.

DevilsWin I like your argument. I agree whole heartedly with you on everything you have posted. I too agree that they are destroying American factories, however, the sad realization of it is that theres basically nothing any of us can do. I worked for Coca-Cola for a couple of years several years ago and always hated dealing with that bunch. I hate Wal Mart. I hate everything about it. And I dont buy into any of the garbage they put on tv about bringing jobs here or there. However, it is basically the only store I have to go to. I do my grocery shopping at Food City, but I would rather take a beating as to go to Wal Mart..And by the way, didnt they get busted NATIONWIDE for using illegal immigrants (and paying them a bowl of rice and a quarter a day) as part of their "American work force"??

Wal-Mart is a joke, Believe me I work there.

Arbys Man Wrote:Wal-Mart is a joke, Believe me I work there.

Why work there then? If it's a joke then go to a surrounding business who pays just as much or more. Oh, wait a minute there isnt one.

Another mis-informed person who has absolutely no clue about the things they hear on TV. BTW, Ive worked at both, Food City and Wal-Mart and believe me when I tell you that shopping at Wal-Mart could save you over 20% on your groceries. If you think for one minute Food City isnt sticking it to you on prices then my friend you are wrong. My opinion on all of this, Dont shop at Wal-Mart if you feel its killing american factories, find you some place to shop where the prices are fair and the assortment of products are abundant. I dont think Wal-Mart will miss you though.
