Pikeville Panthers 2008

** Message per administrator**

This is a new thread about Pikeville Football in 2008. It is NOT a thread attacking individual members for their opinions. Anymore of this and this thread will be closed as well.

Just follow the rules and it won't be closed.

Three of Pikeville's four losses came from teams that are in the states finals in their respective classes. I believe all three will win state titles in their class. I believe Pikeville had a pretty good team this year and I believe next years class will be more productive than this years class. It will also be their second season with the belly offense.
#4
Pikeville can't beat a good team. Shoot the messenger. No wins against a good team in the last three years. Hope I'm wrong.
#5
Pikeville Football has a great future coming. We just need more people to start supporting the program and stop criticizing the program.

Jackson...Please keep up the good work!! You do have faithful fans standing beside your coaching staff and your student athletes.
#6
Agree'd... 100% Keep up the Good Work Coach.
#7
We will have to replace alot next year but I believe we have some quality players ready to step into those positions and contribute. Pikeville will be fine next year IMO.
#8
Don't see Pikeville going as far as they did this year. It definitely is a plus to play in a weaker district.
#9
pikeville will need to get all the boys who are freshmen this year that quit to come back out, they were good in jr.high. The jr.high program was really good this year too, plus they have the best back in the mountains. I see them doing pretty well.

Just like the past few years, Pikeville will be as good as their lineplay and ability to play SMART football.

It can be argued that the only team to knock Pikeville out fo the playoffs the past two seaosns, is Pikeville. Last year Pikeville clearly overlooked Hazard, this year they self destructed with turnovers againbst LCA.

Pikeville is blessed to have possibly the best returning player in 1A, but if Harmon is getting hit by three defenders whenever he touches the ball, it is a moot point.

Keys to Pikeville's succes next year:
- Finding an O-line
- The development of Branham at the QB position, in particular the ability to efficiently throw 12-15 times a game.
- Utilizing the Cleary kid as a strong second option to Harmon
- Keeping Harmon healthy
#11
Is Tyler Baker returning? If he is then he needs to have the ball thrown to him at least five times a game, he has the size and athleticism to go up and get the ball.

Daniel Harmon should have and outstanding year. If Branham comes along at quarterback then the Panthers should be alright, and they should still get the #1 seed going into the playoffs.

Good Luck in '08 Panthers!

Excellent analysis EKU...Don't forget about Ross McCoy, who was very good this year, and several other good RBs for Pikeville. The key in getting back to the Pikeville of old is getting all the players out IMO, making sure the JH and little league programs are top-notch (not playing people 2 years older than them and the HC being at ALL these games like Hillard Howard always was), loosening up on the kids a little in the off season so they are not burned out, and hitting more in practice instead of standing around talking until everyone is rolling their eyes and blue in the face. Said from many people that there are way too many team meetings which go on and on and on and on and on with the coaches talking and talking and talking until it completely wears the kids out. And again, this coaching staff needs an assistant or two who are from Pikeville...it would mean a great deal. They should beg Ben Howard and Jason Howell to join the staff, and then they would have a staff second to none in the mountains. Both of those guys care about the Pikeville kids and the program more than anyone in the world.

Of course I will get slammed for my comments, but I am just trying to help. Just passing along the consensus of what is being said by 90% of Pikeville fans, who were here long, long ago and will be here long, long after...

Not slamming the coaches, they are good guys.

So you mean to tell me that Pikeville has no coaches that are actually from Pikeville? Well I beg to differ considering that I went to PIkeville my entire life and I am on the coaching staff there now. My name is Jason "Gravy" Anderson and I am going into my 3rd straight year as a varsity assistant. I also helped coach on the varsity level in 2002. In 2004 I was co-head coach of the jr. high team. I helped them as much as I could the past two years as well. I also helped with the little league program this year. And also coached some freshman and JV games the past two years. I have also given plenty of time to Pikeville's little leagie and senior league baseball programs. I coached two straight 13-14 year old All-Star teams and did pretty well with them both. We won district and area both years. In 2003 I was the coach for a senior league team, one of the little league teams coaches quit so I took them over as well having two teams and two practices and two sets of games. Oh and for the record I'll guarantee that nobody loves and cares about this program as much as I do. If you look at the jr. high coaches right now (they help on Friday nights for varsity) both of them are Pikeville alum. Matt Branham and Paul Sullivan are their names. This was Matt's 3rd year with the jr high and Paul's second. That makes three total Pikeville alum that help with the football program. That is three more than you claim is out there. Maybe if your computer could wheel itself around the football field, so you could hide behind it, then you would come out and help coach. I love the guys on this staff and respect them all very much. They work their tails off everyday even if you don't approve. Maybe if you were on staff everything would be much better and everyone would love us. I don;t want to seem like a smart alec but I must correct the false statements that were posted on here. I hope the truth helps people who read this thread.

Well youll be happy to know that mandatory weight lifting has been put off until after Christmas but whomever chooses to lift can do so either after school or in Copelys PE class. Hopefully now these kids who are burned out can get a month to recover. As far as Ben Howard goes although I do think hed be a great addition to any staff he joined. I dont think hed ever leave LCC. Didnt the current coach offer "Mania" a position on the staff and he declined?

Good post TRAIN85. It seems as though JETPILOT starts his/her post out in a sensible and intelligent manner. However, about midway through the post he/she just can't help but try to downplay everything about Pikeville Football. I don't think he/she really wants to see Pikeville Football do well at all. Sounds like their is some ulterior motive for this person other than caring about how the football program is doing.
I hope the administrator understands that everyone else on here has interesting posts that usually are fun and entertaining, while JETPILOT only wants to bash everyone involved with the Pikeville Football program. It is because of JETPILOT that the last thread was closed, so don't penalize everyone else that wants to post on this thread because of one indivdual. Everything that JETPILOT will be negative and critical.
I figured that JETPILOT has had enough anyway, after Coach Jackson got finished with him. He posts have no merit anymore. So let's move on to better discussions.

Can anyone from Pikeville tell me how close Daniel Harmon is to being the all time leading rusher at Pikeville? He should be pretty close. I figure at this point hes right behind Greg Hackney in 3rd and IF he stays healthy this year could move past Brent Coleman.

Youre right. Line play determines how good ANY team is gonna be. Show me a good football team and Ill show you a good line on both sides of the ball. We will have a relatively young line but we do have some big kids who have worked hard in the weight room and have been making progress for 2 years. Moose Anderson has really impressed me alot over the past year. The big question is whether either Dusty Khoshreza or Ethan Murray will be at Center. With Anderson and Trey Branham at tackles and JR Robinson and Ben Staggs at Guard. We will have some size AND speed upfront next year.
Blake made great strides at the QB postion this year. With his work ethic there is no reason to believe that he wont be even better next year. With Baker and Taylor Ratliff and Jay Martin he will have some reliable receivers to throw to.
Yes Cleary is a good back but Josh Mullins is the second option to Harmon IMO. This kid has been the fastest player on the team for the past 2 years and is as tough as they come.

Also as I said on the previous thread. The leadership that has been missing on this team since John Michael Mayo and Ryan Shurtleff went down in '06 is finally in place. These underclassmen would follow Harmon, Trey Branham and Josh Mullins because they care about this team and not there own personal stats.

You may be right about Ben never leaving but if there is one group he would listen to it would be Pikeville. Don't know if they offered Howell a position or not, but they should ask again since Tates Creek's coach resigned. The Pikeville guys mentioned in the earlier post are great, but are those part-time positions, or do any of them have teaching positions in the school system? Also, from reading your post it looks like Pikeville's line will be pretty good. Obviously the cupboard is far from bare at Pikeville.

This post contributes nothing to the topic. Not to mention being way off base. Surely you have something to add other than attacking others for their opinions.

Just throwing this out there since it is in question about having coaches from Pikeville on the staff...but they also have Coach Wheeler...who has played and coached at Pikeville his entire life if i am not mistaken...correct me if i am wrong

Mark Wheeler has been an assistant with Pikeville since 1986 but he played his high school ball for Ceredo Kenovo High School near Huntington.

You may call it part time what I do but I put a full time jobs hours into coaching at Pikeville. I'll be there as long as they will have me!
I am also in school right now to finish up my degree in education so that I can focus on teaching and coaching full time. I am actually on the Presidential Scolars List and the Dean's list right now.

That's great man. I hope you are at PHS for many years to come.

Coach Gravy is one of the best coaches i have ever seen on the sidelines here at Pikeville. I may have not seen many but he's still way up there. He completely gives his heart and soul into this football program in every second he's got. Also very funny and humorous while still getting the job done well.

I hope that man is coaching the PHS Panthers until the day I die...

According to the KHSAA website Barret didnt surpass Brent. Actually Barret isnt even on the list anywhere. He may have the single season record or something like that. After I saw how many yards Brent had (6,696 4 more yards than Shaun Alexanders career totals) Daniel isnt as close as I thought he was. But hes still one of the top three backs to ever play here that Ive seen.

My comments are not of base. Sounds like more of "word on the street", "people are saying", "90% of the Pikeville fans are saying" type of stuff to me. So if you have opinions, go ahead and state them and quit trying to make it seem as though everyone else is in your corner, which they are clearly not.

So you mean to tell me that not only is his wife smoking hot but she is smart too. What a combo! Gravy is one of the smartest people I have been around that is his age. When he applies to something, it gets done. Congrats Gravy on your accomplishments and I hope to see you at Pikeville for a long time.
