Explosion at Phelps High School
#1
Just read this on WYMT

http://www.wkyt.com/wymtnews/headlines/12628726.html
#2
I hope that nobody was seriously injured. This is frightening for anyone with school age children.
#3
Keep us posted, I wonder what happened?

Thats crazy...keep us updated please.
#5
Well whats the latest?
#6
I'm watching WKYT, and basically all they did was mention that there was a small explosion. They didn't say much else.

#7
The report says a girl brought some kind of "device" to the school and it went off.
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
#8
School is being dismissed and, as of right now, the only person reported injured was the girl with the 'device.'
[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
#9
That is what I heard on the newscast as well...
#10
minor damage has been reported to school don't know about injuries.
#11
just heard on wdhr that it was fireworks not a device.
#12
That is what is being said at this time....recreational fireworks and that students are being treated for hearing related injuries at this time.....glad it wasn't anything more serious.
#13
Yeah just fortunate it wasn't as serious as it was put on. Glad everyone is safe.
#14
The girl herself is the only one with injuries that needed to be seen by a doctor. From what I was told (by one of the kids that was in the room at the time) was that the "device" AKA fireworks was in either her purse or her pocket because that is where the "explosion" took place. From what I was told....... it sounded like a loud """CRACK""" sound. When I hear more I will keep you updated....
**((((((YEP.... I got out early because of this)))))**

Jeez, if I had only known that I could set off some jumping jacks and get out of school....

#16
From what I'm hearing it did scare both the students and faculty. They said the "crack" itself was very loud. I came by there about oh... 15 minutes ago and there are still ambulances and state police there.

Yeah, but then you would probably be facing some legal action.

Glad no one is seriously injured!!

Is there any indication on how old the girl is? I would assume 14-18. But IMO, the school needs to push for punishment greater than what the school can administer. Bringing explosives into a center of education is unacceptable!!!

She could be charged with felony counts of wanton endangerment and even attempted arson.

State police were on the scene and from what I heard were who actually dismissed school.

Felony wanton endangerment requires disregard for human life.. I don't think that anyone would ever say that a firecracker in a pocket would fit that criteria. And attempted arson requires that the intent was to burn a structure, and the ability to do so. A fire cracker wouldn't burn a structure, nor was it her intention. (hopefully, or else she road the short bus this morning, thinkin that a fire cracker would burn it down.)

I'm going out on a limb and saying she'll get slapped with some minor misdemeanors..

And then probably recieve nothing, especially if she's under 18.

Thats how it goes these days. Sad

What goes through kids/peoples heads anymore??

We heard about this early today at Belfry, not too long after it happened.

I hate to tell you but you are wrong, I have had cases like this and it doesnt matter if it was a firecracker or not it could have caused serious injury and she knew that she shouldnt have had it to start with not to say on school grounds, and yes firecrackers can burn a building down. And I said she could be charged with that depending on the situation, which we dont know because we wasnt there. She could be charged with a single count for everyone in the room as far as that goes as well by placing them in harms way. And i doubt she will just get a slap on the wrist. Too much crap like this in school these days.

I work with a guy whose daughter works at PHS. She was walking by the classroom when it happened. She said it sounded like a shotgun going off. She said that she ran to her class and locked the door and got all the kids on the ground because she thought someone was shooting. They treated around 15 because of their ears bleeding, she said.

SOOOO stupid. She deserves to be majorly punished.
