Magoffin County - 2 hour delay
01-23-2008, 07:46 PM
1 Inch expected over night into the morning hours.

Yep, snow at 1am, and then it could snow from 5am till 11pm

Is it true that a lot of schools have already used up all their snow days? That they now have to make up the rest they miss?
01-23-2008, 08:41 PM
Pike County has used them all up.
01-23-2008, 09:42 PM

Floyd Co. has used all of them too. We have started adding days to the end of the school calendar.

Floyd County is ridiculous, it's not even bad enough for Pike to delay and Floyd closes.

Well when my mom got up they reported regular schedule, she told me around 10 minutes later they called it off because North Floyd County was really bad. This was around 5:30 this morning. I also think the waiting of snow this morning and afternoon was a factor. The snow expected over night was little chance, but today the chances are higher for snow.

There were three coal trucks that slid off the highway ( RT. 979 ) this morning and taking a chance for kids on a bus going up many of these roads is not worth it.

I want to say this... snow or ice and the lives of people's children is not something to play around with. I always attended and my children have always attended, the "city" school. It's not too hard for us to get there... even if things got so bad they could walk, but I do worry about those children and their parents, who live out of district and must travel. The most important aspect to consider overall is people out in the outlying county areas, things can get pretty dicey with the weather & road conditions, pretty quickly. I would rather see those kids going later days when the weather is better, saturdays, or extended school year than to see someone's child or parent @ the hospital or funeral home. I'm sure the school officials are monitoring this closely & I know it's a serious concern for them as well. If they make decisions that don't make sense to your particular location, I'm sure they've considered the entire scope of their school's district and made their decisions accordingly. The main thing is safety first!

Not Powell County...:ChairHit:

Well Lawrence Co is stupid. They have school when the buses cant even get up the roads the other day. And today there isnt anything even on the ground and they cancel.

Because everyone knew it was going to snow and they put lives at risk sending kids to school and running the buses when they could have just stayed home. A few counties called off in anticipation of the snow that they'd get on top of what they had.

I totally agree. This is what Pike County always does. Send them to school when the roads are fine and then send them home when the roads are at their worst.

At least Pike County got that half a day in though. That's half a day you don't have to go in the summer
