Johnson Central's New Field
#1
Does anyone know any particulars about JC's new field. Will it be completed in time for the 2008 season or are the Eagles going on the road for their games.

They scheduled something like 65 home games between MS, JV and varsity. I don't think their field will be ready. I heard they approached Paintsville about sharing Charlie Adkins Field, but were turned down. They might have to play some games at the unlit JV field.

Who approached, and who turned down the offer?

I didn't ask, but was just what I heard. "They" was the actual term used.

Aint heard the first thing mentioned about that. Whom might be the "they " that is doing the asking and whom might be the "they" that are turning down it down. Lets hear some names here.

For one thing Charlie Adkins field is not Paintsville High School's field to begin with. It is a City Park, and the last I heard Johnson Central was also located inside the city limits.

Johnson Central will more than likely not be ready for opening day, but you will be surprised at how quick things can take shape from this point on with a couple of weeks of good weather. They should be able to play on it sometime before season's end I am sure. The infield and outfield will all be sodded and you can play on it in just a couple of weeks after it is installed. All of the fences can be installed in just a couple of days as well. Stop to think about just what it is that a baseball field is comprised of, and you'll see that there is really not all that much to one. It's just grass , dirt, a few concrete blocks and chain link fence. The very basic of all constuctions.

Everybody kept saying that there was no way the Cal Ripkin fields would be ready in time to play on a couple of years ago too, but guess what, they were.

I think it really all looks worse than what it really is. There's just not all that much involved to building a baseball field.

Like I said earlier....I had heard.....and that no names were given and I didn't ask.
I agree that it doesn't take long to build a baseball field. But I would hate to think that JC would put all the money they have in the football field and then would scratch out a baseball field in a couple of weeks. I know the football team has enjoyed successes the past few years, but the baseball program has enjoyed great success for a long time.
I ain't against the baseball program and am not trying to "dog" them, heck...I support them, I just would like to see a first class facility for them, and I don't really think they could put the kind of facility they deserve together in a couple of weeks. Plus...they still have to build a softball field too don't they?

I did not put it out as fact.....just put out what I heard...if someone has heard different, then they could let us know....isn't that they way these boards are supposed to work?

No...it does not belong to PHS, but even the "Powers that be" refer to it as the High School Field. Within reason, whatever the High School wants done to the place they get it.
If the coaches want the grass cut, they call the city, and someone comes over and cuts it.
Are you suggesting that the City will grant JCHS access to the field over PHS?

Not suggesting anything at all.

Yeah I know you probably got your black and gold sweatshirt on as we speak.Smile Come on now, your trying to make it sound like everybody that is involved in baseball or softball either one are getting screwed over some how or another.

If you remember the football field was not exactly complete this year either. You just about had to have binoculors to see the players from the stands, but they are now getting the rest of the facilities complete through a series of phases. I didn't hear anybody insinuating that the football boys were getting screwed over because their seating or the new locker rooms was not complete. IDK, it could be the same for baseball this year, there may not be the stadium parts that are the finshed product, but that dont take anything away from being able to play the game. All seating is , is creature comfort to the spectators anyway. It doesnt effect the players at all.

Also if you remember in 2003 Pikeville played all of their games on the road, because they were getting their field turf put down. Now look what they have! I dont think you heard anything from Pikeville fans crying about how their kids were being screwed over because of that particular inconvenience.. I dont think it would be the end of the world for anybody to have to be a little inconvenienced for the sake of getting two brand new state of the art facilities. It's not like they are ultimately going to stick the players out in a cow pasture somewhere. They will have one of the nicest facilities anywhere when it's all done. Just about all construction jobs end up going over a scheduled time of completion date anyways. Personally I dont think this is all that great of an issue if the completion time does run just a tad bit over schedule. As far as scratching something out in a couple of weeks, realisticly there is not anything that is going to consume all that much time in doing, once the final grade is put down. Weather could play a delay issue, but that is something out of anyone's control.

As for the softball girls there are still two other fields that can be used on the Cal Ripkin sites. Could by chance happen to be a little inconvenient to all parties if they should happen to have to utilize them, but hey everything in life dont always run like clockwork. At least it dont in my world.

IMO...baseball fields don't spring up overnight....but I hope that don't try to rush the process and end up with a less than quality product.....everything that I've heard indicates that it will be a great complex...It will be less than a stellar situtation to have to play all the district games on the road espically this season with the district tourney being seeded....

Do youthink it may take 4-5 years to complete? I would hate for that to happen to our softball players. That would be horrible. It would be like funneling all the $$ into a last run for a basketball program!Cool

i was just wondering if you might know what will happen if they do get the field but not the bleachers? they obviously couldn't host the district without bleachers...who would get the district in the scenario??

No, I dont think there is a shot of that happening. I think you will see everything completed this year with the teams actually playing on them before the season is over. Remember just like the baseball field, it is not a real complicated thing to construct. In fact the cost will be much lower than what the cost of the baseball field will be because of it's significantly smaller size and the fact that there is no cost involved in sodding an infield. The constuction of the softball field is almost identical to that of just one of the Cal Ripkin fields. They are for all intents and purposes the very same. You saw how quickly they were completed once the weather broke even while everyone was panicing that there was no way that they would be completed in time to play on.

Simple observation: If JCHS has a schedule of 65 home games. Paintsville I am sure has a large home schedule as well. KHSAA says you can't play during school hours. THen how could they share a single field? The games would probably have to last till 1:30 or 2:00 AM. I am sure someone will turn this into a CEntral vs. Paintsville thing, some nut always does. This post is intended to be about scheduling not rivalry!!!!

I don't know how much seriousness there is to the whole "city park" deal, but jus to note on the 65 home games thing...middle school and JV played the majority of their games on the Jv field, unless the Varsity field was open, so ya could knock those off, leaving maybe 15 or so Varsity games needing to be scheduled somewhere. I dont think there will be alot of problems with it, the only thing that concerns me are the couple of Annual tournaments we have, Appalachian and Broughtons.

IMO JC already had that. All they really needed was a new bleach and clubhouse facilities and maybe a sunscreen. They had a beautiful field.

I'm pretty sure they can trade out with another teams slot if they are unable to host.

is lawrence county in the rotation yet? i always thought out of all the schools in the district they had the best field and facilities....how long til they get to host anything? they are the ones with the big score board arent they?

JC has The appalachian wireless and brougton classic from april 10th thru april 19th. This envolves serveral teams. How do they handle these? I hope everything works out on the new field, but it looks like a pile of dirt to me right now. maybe with a lot of good weather.

If I'm not mistaken Lawrence Co. has to sit out a full rotation. I agree that Lawrence has one of the top fields in the region. You know as well as I know they have the big score board.

To my understanding that was one of the stipulations after coming into our region. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

well i mean it makes since i was just unsure on the reasoning behind that...thanks for the info though

What's the field going be like? All grass or astroturf? What's the dimensions of it going to be? I hope they get it built in time, because no team should have to play all road games. Makes practices hard enough as it is finding a field then never get the feeling of being the home team.
