Prestonburg 54 - Paintsville 20
#1
Final.
#2
Somebody told me paintsville was good...great game by pburg.
#3
Did Craynon even line up on offense? I heard he was on defense, but also heard the majority of the offense went through Sword and Setser.
#4
This was worse than I thought it would be. Congrats P-Burg.
#5
Allen Craynon didn't play at all for Prestonsburg. All offense went through Seth Setser, Blake Meade, Austin Gearheart, Michael Burchett, and Matt Sword. Most of the damage was done on the ground, as Prestonsburg did throw for for 2 or 3 touchdowns.

Paintsville didn't have that bad of a team. Quarterback Deaton was really good, runningback Doderer had over 100+ yards on the ground with a few big runs. Thought it may have been closer than expected after watching the 1st quarter, but the Blackcats turned it on in the 2nd quarter and didn't look back.

Congrats Blackcats, go get those Bobcats!
#6
Congratulations P-burg, good start to the season.
#7
I believe the final was 54-20. That doesn't sound that much better... but it's not as bad.

Pburg played a pretty solid game but they do have some holes in their defense, but I must say this is probably the weakest Pville team I have ever seen. They are very small on the lineand looked to be short on numbers on the sidelines. Hope they can soon turn things around. Pburg it seems may finally have a throwing QB, Burhcett throws a pretty ball and Gearheart is a great receiver. The Blackcats have to improve that Defense to have a shot next week against the Bobcats, with the holes they currently have Fugate will run all night.
#10
Thats about what I expected. Prestonsburg has more talent and Paintsville is playing under the new coach. I think that it is really bad news for players at Paintsville like Tyler Deaton who are good players and have to adjust to the new system for their senior year. Prestonsburg was strong. Passing was solid and they looked better than I expected.

Have to wonder how many Tiger teams you have seen to say this is the weakest you have ever seen. They are far from small on the line, actually, they prob average about a hundred pounds per man too much. They had 7 fewer players than Pburg had tonight. Best wishes to the Tigers getting it turned around though.

I agree. Paintsville had a solid offense, defense give up too many yards. Paintsville has a very nice team that may be able to compete with Pikeville for district. The line had good size, receivers were big, back is fast, quarterback has a good arm. Only problem was they were working in a new offense and they were facing a very good, experienced Prestonsburg team.

Paintsville has a lot, I mean a lot of potential!

Best of luck to the Tigers throughout the rest of the season.

I agree with you Guru! TH must not have seen many Tiger teams if he thinks this is the weakest. But in all fairness the Tigers didn't have the talent and experience level to beat P-burg this year. A few less mistakes on the Tigers part and the game could have been closer, but the outcome wouldn't have changed.

The Tigers will be fine this year. It is good to see the numbers up for the Tigers because that is crucial. I think that if the Tigers can get the new system and execution down better then they can play with and beat most of the the teams they will need to this year. P-burg was a tough team to open up with this year.
#14
And to think, this was the score of the game without Allen Craynon?
#15
It's very atypical for the Blackcat offense to be ahead of the defense at this point.

This may be the sharpest P-burg offensive performance I've seen in a first game. Players were where they were supposed to be, everyone got off the ball well, the timing was there, and (most importantly) good blocking was thrown all over the field. Add Craynon's speed (next week) to Setser's power and Gearheart's hands, and this offense has the potential to be pretty formidable.

I must say...the flexbone P-burg is running seems to be a more potent running formation than has been the two back shotgun.

The defense played well enough, but couldn't be catagorized as a "shut down" type. The closest the defense gets to that is when it gets pushed back into the red zone when it goes to 8 man defensive fronts.

I see one potentially big problem with P-burg's defense (especially vs. Breathitt Co.). It did NOT do a good job vs. the offensive spread (where P-burg is playing a 3-3 and 3-4). The defensive ends did a decent job of keeping the QB from getting outside, but whichever LB is assigned to spot (needs to be the quickest and surest tackler on the D) was habitually getting locked up with interior linemen on delayed handoffs and QB keepers. If that LB isn't free to make the play, there's too much open space for the runner to break into the secondary. The LB must shake/avoid the block, not just play off it.

Congrats to the Blackcats! Good luck next week against Breathitt. Now lets get ready to watch the Wildcats thump them Red Birds!
#17
good game..
#18
Congrats P-Burg on the win.
Their offense looked very good last night. Will only get better after they get Cranyon back.

The Tigers will be fine. Good game by a good football school that has had nothing but football on its mind for years.
This schedule is a leftover type thing. (we all knew this) We probably didn't need to play a "p-burg" type team 1st game, but that's the way Nabisco packs 'em.
We need to focus on teams within our district. (I agreed with Bryan Auxier from WKLW)
I know we'll get it together for the games that really matter to us and our program... in the meantime, I say "Let's all be supportive and positive, let's go to school, let's go to practice, and let's be good to and for each other". It's always easier to draw twice as many bees with sugar than vinegar.
Good Luck to both teams in their upcoming games!

PBurg has a nice team. And things turned out the way i pretty much thought they would. But, I have to say one thing. I think it is pretty classless of the PBurg staff to be airing it out in the fouth quarter with a forty point lead. Not only did they do it once. But they turned around and did it twice. Just a slap in the face IMO. Keep the ball on the ground, kill the clock and show some respect for the other team. Doing things like this WILL always come back to bite you before you know it.

Well said.....games like P-burg and JC are "extras" and have no bearing on the playoff picture.

I also agree with you that Coach K got this schedule handed to him. He is already a good coach, and is gonna make a great one! If they just keep on keepin' on all will be well when it said and done!

Nice post, as you can tell by my name, my blood is Tiger Blue when it comes to High School Football. Good luck to all the Mountain teams.

No, you really don't...

Prestonsburg ran their regular offense (not exactly "airing it out", but it does include the pass) while rotating 2nd team linemen, RB's, and LB's throughout the 2nd half.

This is the first game of the season, for goodness sake. Let the players play the game, OK ?

Have to disagree on this. I can't remember any second teamers scoring last night??
Pburg's coach has built a reputation trying to score on team's that they have already put out of reach. I am used to it and expected nothing less. It's not a big deal. I have always said that his kid's play with a lot more sportsmanship than he has ever coached. In this game it was proven once again. Blackcat players have a lot of class IMO!
I remember on one conversion attempt, that #53 laid a great block on my kid that allowed the attempt to be good. He helped Jake up and patted him on the back!
"OTH" just meant that Pburg should have focused on running out the clock with a 34 point lead with 6-7 minutes to go. You know....I have seen teams lose games because of clock management, or the lack of. It's just as important to know hot to eat up the clock as to score.
#27
BTW, congrats Blackcats! Keep your head's up Tigers!

Way to go Blackcats!!

A few comments on some of the posts about this game:
1. This no where near the weakest Paintsville team ever, P-burg has 16 seniors on this year's team and they have all been running the same system for 4 years now. Paintsville simply played a top 5 2A team.
2. Nehemiah Doderer ran for over 170 yards in this game and will have a great year for the Tigers.
3. The score was 6-0 at the end of the first and I thought we had a game on our hands. However, P-burg turned it up in the second quater and was up 32 at the half.
4. Paintsville didn't quit and played with P-burg's first team in the seconf half. This is important because it showed that Coach Kinner has them going in the right direction. If the effort is there, good things will happen.
5. Paintsville's defense needs a lot of work, Gearheart is a good receiver but when nobody is defending him, how good does a kid have to be to catch a ball and run to the endzone?
6. In some other threads, some are saying Paintsville will not win the #2 seed in the district, that is laughable. With Hazard being out of our district, the winner of the Pikeville-Paintsville game will be the champion and the loser will be the #2 seed. Paintsville has the weapons to be dangerous this year and should be ready for the late season showdown with Pikeville for the district championship. Paintsville's next 3 games are Phelps, Allen Central, and Betsy Layne so Paintsville should have enough time to make some adjustments before taking on more solid competition.
