All of this rain got me to thinking about past "Muddy" games. What are some of your favorite Muddy Memories?
I played in WV and we weren't ranked in the top 16(That's how many get to play in the playoffs at the end of the year). We were 4 - 2. We had to play 7th ranked Clear Fork. The game was delayed for 1 hr. Once we got started, it was a blast. By the end of the first Qtr. You couldn't tell what anybodys number was. On film, you just had to know where you were during the game. It was 12 - 7 with 35 or so sec. remaining in the 4th qtr. They had the ball on our 20 yd line. They threw 4 straight passes. 2 were incomplete. I knocked 1 down. The other one was intercepted by me to seal the deal. It is a great memory. I love muddy games. What about you?

Jenkins/Phelps like 5 years ago. It was the only game played in the state that night due to lightining and flooding. THe video to that game in UNREAL to watch because if a team punted, the ball would just stick in the mud when it landed with no bounce or rotation at all..

Before someone from Cov. Cath. post it I'm going to: The '97 mud bowl between Highlands vs. Cov. Cath. It was a playoff game at Highlands and Cov. Cath. comes back after being down at the half to win in the last seconds.
You couldn't tell who played for whom and after that Highlands had to replace their field.

Belfry and Breathitt Co. in 2002. I remember when we played at South Floyd in 2002, it was their first year for the new field. It didn't rain for two weeks but we get to the field and there is around 3" of mud all over the field.

Kiwanis Bowl between Russell and Ashland freshman teams two years ago. Putnam stadium was completely flooded. The officials could not spot the ball until right before the play because the ball was floating.

The muddiest game I ever played in was in 2002. Russell vs. Carrol County in the second round of the playoffs. You would get down in your stance and your hand would sink in that cold mud up to your knuckels. The field was so bad after that game we had to play our next game at putnam stadium. (Playing at home in putnam stadium was the wierdest experience of my career.)

The muddiest game I've seen is the '05 Shelby Valley/Prestonsburg game. The field was a wreck and it was just a constant down pour, I believe the game was stopped like 3 times and the game didn't end until around midnight. It was also a very good game as Pburg trailed by two touchdowns at halftime and won by 3 touchdowns.

2002 was the rainiest year this area had seen in 50 years.
2003 was second.
The Belfry vs. Breathitt in '02 was one of the muddiest I'd ever seen.
Belfry vs Bell Co. in '98 was a mess also.

The muddiest game I ever played in was Pikeville/Belfry in '02. Unfortunately, that's the same game that I tore my MCL and cracked my femur.

Never rained much when I was in HS for football games, but both championship games my 10yo and 13yo years in JFL were ridiculous.
When I was 10, we the Russell Bengals, undefeated, played the Ashland Bengals, undefeated in a bowl game at Fairview's football field. Mud so deep people lost shoes in it. We won however, 20-6.
When I was 13, it was a little worse, we the Redskins, played the Rams for the championship, eventhough we beat them 42-6 earlier in the season. This was so muddy, you couldn't even stand. We lost 6-0, I'd say there were atleast 20 fumbles. It wasn't just muddy, it was extremely slick, and at tthat time Russell had a HUGE hump in the field, so you would slide when down in your stance.

JC vs. Mason at Mason 06 was by far the muddiest game i have ever played/seen in my life time. There was literally a steady stream going down the middle of the field. The refs had to eye ball were the ball was spotted and Grim ran past the feild goal post cause no one knew were the goal line was. Never the less it was a blast to play in haha even puttin coach on his back after the game just put the cake in the oven lol!

One of my muddy game memory is a good one, at least i think. in '06 we played russell at their staidum. that game it was so cold and rainy. the field would swallow you in mud. i was a senior, and they were the defending state champs. that game was fun. i had one interception and a concussion that game lol. we got beat 55-0 but it was muddy. the concussuion wasnt fun but russell is a hard hitting team. muddy night

I remember that game. That game was for the #4 seed in the playoffs that year. I don't remember who won the game. But it was a good game by what i can remember of it.

I remember a game between Pikeville and Middlesboro in 2002 I believe, the pic for this game is below. That game was crazy. Pikeville at Paintsville in 2006 was also one of the muddiest games I have been a part of.

Belfry/Breathitt Co. game in 2002 was about as bad as I can remember. Belfry changed jerseys at the half just to know who was who.. That lasted about 30 seconds into the second half

Maybe not the muddiest but the Russell-Belfry game in 1983 in the play-offs were great.... You could not see the field at all, it was totally under water....like the Kiwanis Bowl a couple of years ago but worse.. the entire field was under water the orange markers were the only thing sticking out of the water......It was nasty !!!!!!!!
Romans 14:11
It is written: " 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.' "

Belfry/Breathitt in 02. That game was nothing but mudd. You really couldnt tell who was who after the kickoff.

I beleive the year was '06. Bell Co. and Knox Central were playing and a down pour just out of nowhere hit. The game was postponed for somewhere around 30-40 minutes because of lightning and there wasn't time to cover the field so it was a pure mess when the two hit the field for the second time of the night.

i love the sloppy muddy games too.....

2002 was a year where it seemingly rained every Thursday and Friday night once district play kicked off. Take that picture from the Middlesboro/Pikeville game multiply it by 3 and you have Corbin and Taylor County. In all of my days, there has never been a muddier game to my knowledge. I do not see how the game was played. It wasn't like there were spots of mud or just mud puddles. 90% of the field was pure mud and between the 40's there was with no exaggeration 6-8 inches of pure mud.
The players were hosed off from head to toe with a water hose after the game before getting on the bus.

I remember one muddy game when the "watergirls" went to run out to the team on a "timeout" and one fell face first into a "mudhole"... came up looking "wide-eyed" and covered... then there was another time in the mud and I want to say we were @ like Wheelwright... and we were cheering in @ least 4" of mud... it was fun for the cheerleaders too!

Pikeville/Hazard 1993 playoffs. We ranamed Daniel Field "Lake Daniel" for that game because Hazards field was almost completely under water. John Hatfield broke a 60 yard TD run and there was so much water on the field that he had a rooster tail of water behind him running down the field like a speed boat. After the first few plays of the game it looked like a Cleveland Browns intersquad scrimmage was being played we were all so muddy. We won the game 28-6 so we came up with an even better name for it after the game "Lake Hambley" LOL!
