So, from which Northern Kentucky football teams should we expect a big 2009 after a lackluster 2008? Here are some ideas:
Dixie Heights (4-7 last year)
The Colonels have a strong senior class that took its lumps early last season. They did, however, rebound to record some pretty impressive victories (46-28 over Conner and 56-7 over Campbell County). Dixie has its customary difficult schedule. But its offense, anchored by a strong offensive line, should be able to keep it in most games. Don't be surprised if the Colonels start 2-0 against small-school state powers Beechwood and Newport Central Catholic. Those should be good games.
Holmes (3-8)
The Bulldogs ended last season on a seven-game losing streak, during which they were outscored by an average score of 36-7. Most of their best players return and the move down to Class 4A alone should give them a few extra victories.
Covington Catholic (5-7)
Talent-wise, the Colonels should be similar or slightly better than they were in 2008. The schedule is slightly easier. Cardinal Mooney, Elder and Holmes have been replaced by Lexington Catholic, LaSalle and Ryle. (CovCath could not, not even on its very best day, beat Cardinal Mooney or Elder. LexCath, LaSalle and Ryle are competitive matchups.) We'll see what kind of difference first-year coach Dave Wirth makes.
Newport (4-7)
Most in the know will tell you that the Wildcats underachieved in 2008. In the first round of the playoffs they gave top seed DeSales all it could handle. That indicates that the talent is there. Look for first-year coach Nick Rice to infuse the program with some enthusiasm and discipline.
Holy Cross (4-8)
Is this the season the Indians finally get over the NewCath hump? Who knows? But it is one of the best chances they've ever had to pick off the 2A state power. A healthy Andy Roenker will help. Markel Walker, with a full season at quarterback under his belt, will help. The Indians still have a challenging non-district schedule -- which features, Pikeville, Bishop Ready (Ohio), Conner and Beechwood -- but they should compete.
Bishop Brossart (0-10)
Believe it or not, the second-year program wasn't as bad as its record last year. The Mustangs lost a host of impact players early in the season and were playing a non-district schedule that was over their heads. The scheduling issue has been resolved for the most part. Head coach Matt Reinhart said another year of conditioning should alleviate some of the injury concerns. And really, there's nowhere to go but up.

You could include Bryan Station (6-5) in this. They had a winning record, but this team had the potential of being 10-0 and then defeating the previous and favorite State Champions (Highlands). All of the games they lost were extremely close. Also, they have Coach Oliver Lucas, which I heard is a really good coach they got from Colorado. I'm pretty sure they're now a 6A school, and I know they'll soon be contenders for a state championship.

Phelps (2-8) graduated 6 players, but will have 10 seniors and 6 juniors this year. Also, this will be Coach Jesse Peck's second year as coach.

Betsy Layne
3rd year coaching staff 2nd longest in schools history
got good numbers out.
Return 100% scoring from the offense
Return 6 starters on defense
made playoffs last year for 1st time in schools history
They went 3-8 last year lost to state runner-up
Lost two out of three leading rushers(also play defense) the last three games of the season. In my opinion could have possibly went 5-5. If they had them.WOW!
But were not nky

Dixie Heights should be the most improved with what they have returning.
They could just as easily be 0-2 after Beechwood and NewCath but I look for a 1-1 split after the first 2 games. I look for a possible 6 or 7 win season for them.
Possible 2nd place finish in the district.
