Rate your coaches!
#1
Feel free to rate your or the opponents coaches.

Why is or isn't coach _ _ _ _ _ _ a good coach?

This should give everyone a chance to voice their opinions about coaches and enable us to keep game threads about the game in the title of the thread.

Enjoy but keep it clean.:please:

Matney and Chuke Williams ( God Bless Mr. Williams )
Both are great offensive minds but are one-dimensional and once you stop their run you usually beat their teams. I respect both coaches TREMENDOUSLY!!!!!!!!!!
#3
Let me rate Matney. Matney is a very good coach because he gets the most out of his kids. He knows the game very well. Matney's biggest down fall isn't his fault. He plays in 5A. That means he will play Highlands or Covington Catholic in the playoffs on a regular basis. It's very hard for a team from East Ky to beat a team like Highlands. A lot of their players are either from, or played youth football in Cincy. The type of competition they have played their entire life is a big notch above what the kids in the mountain see.

Boyle County- Larry French- GREAT coach.
Wayne County - Shawn Thompson- Not great
Lincoln County- Mike Settles- Alright coach
Pulaski County- John Hines- Nobody has ever done less with more!
Bell County- Dudley Hilton- One of the best EVER!
Madison Southern- David Brumley- not great
Knox Central- Wayne Mills- He is doing great things in Knox County!
McCreary Central- Clinton Gay- Doing the best he can in McCreary County.
Southwestern- Dale Anderson- Has had some pretty good teams over the years
Whitley County- Jim Black- Has a really good team this season

Harlan- Tom Larkey- One of the greatest Mountain coaches ever. Made Rockcastle what it is today!

Rockcastle- Scott Parkey- To early to tell but he has success at everything he has ever done. High school will be no different.

You are completely wrong when you say alot of Highlands or Cov Cath players are from or played youth football in Cincy. I do not think even one of Highlands players is from Cincy, and can not think of any except for maybe one over the last 20 years. As for youth football, Fort Thomas has one of the best programs in the area and has for as long as I remember(and I am over 40). Most of the kids at HHS have gone through the program since elementary school and most of the kids grew up in Fort Thomas. Highlands has a long line of generations going through the school system, First due to the great academics and 2nd for the athletics. Fort Thomas is a great community and people tend to return home and start families here after college. I do not know where you are getting your info, but you are completely off base!!!!

Wow, they don't let you out of the back yard much, do they, Dawg? Either that or they line your cage with week old National Enquirers. Why in the :devilflam would a kid who grew up playing in Cincinnati suddenly decide to play in Ft. Thomas or Covington when they've got teams like Elder, St. X and Colerain? I try not to comment on things that I know NOTHING about. Try it sometime. You'd be amazed at the number of kids on the current Highlands squad who have played in the FTJFL since the third grade.

You know, I have sat down and thought on this many times and this is what i believe to be true....and I believe what makes a great coach is not only the passion they have for the game or x's and o's but also (and in some cases more so) it's about the passion they have for the school that they are at...

Bell Co - Dudley Hilton. #2 in All Time Wins in the State of Kentucky. He has coached 3 different schools (Bell Co, Breathitt Co, Bourbon Co) and has won State Titles with 2 different schools (Bell Co and Bourbon Co). He has won a total of 3 State Championships. (2 @ Bell Co and 1 @ Bourbon Co.)

Dudley hilton number 1 baby! Hes the legendary Coach Hilton:worthy:! We Welcome all Teams to the "Bobcat Hilton" this year!:devilflam

This is just plain old silly:dontthink and incorrect. Both of these programs have a soild tradition and systems in place to reload and replace graduating seniors.

Now if you would have said Covington Holy Cross:eyeroll:That's another storyConfusedhh:

I'm going to throw out the name John DeRossett because he's the coach I know the best. I have given he and the majority of the coaching staff at Prestonsburg a hard time in the past. I get so friggin aggravated at some of the plays and adjustments they make in a game, but all in all, they are a great bunch of coaches. I'm glad to see this new offense they have implemented and think they have done a fantastic job with it. My one complaint this year has to be the play calling though. I realize you have to run the ball in order to open up the field for passing, but when no one can stop your passing game, why come out and run the ball 2 times then leave yourself with a long 3rd down play? My philosophy is throw it until they prove they can stop it. To this point, no one has proved they can stop Prestonsburg's passing game. Other than that, great job coaches. Big Grin

What about Breathitt County's coaches? We have 3 state championships.

Is anyone gonna talk good about a coach that is NOT at your school? Or did I misread the topic of this thread?

So no kid in 20 years has moved across the river in his teenage years to play football for Ft Thomas? Okay, I will take your word for it. Most youth programs have traveling teams. Does Ft Thomas not play against any competition from Ohio? I know that most East Ky schools that border opposing states play West Virginia, and Ohio teams.

Chill out a little bit. Yeah I get out of the yard plenty. Just don't get up to Ft Thomas much. Sorry for offending you though.

there are tons of coaches around here that can or could coach with anyone in the state but as said before we don't have the support, players (sometimes), coaching staffs like most of the big schools but i guess thats why they are up there year in and year out. we would have to put like lawrence co. and Sheldon Clark together to get the amount of boys they have to pick from!

just a little input i live down in alabama beside prattville HS and they're like 13th in the country and i believe they ended #3 last year but this coach down here has 120 kids dress out every game.

Sorry I went off, but it gets old after a while. :HitWall: Highlands football has done what it has done with largely home-grown talent; kids and coaches. Kids transfer into the system every year, but the bulk of them have been there from third grade onward. Hearing the manufactured excuses about why teams can't play with them gets old. Wanna join the party? Diversify your system. Get the kids working the system in grade school so that it becomes second nature to them when they get to high school. Complete a pass once in a while. No big secret.

Coach John and Jim Tom Allen split the play calls from my understanding. John is still a run first guy and will try to establish a running game before he breaks out the passing game. And I quite honestly like that philosophy. But if we need to move the ball, we know we can with our passing game because no one has shut it down yet.

No problem. It's unfortunately a relatively common misunderstanding. There are two kids in the last 20 years that were from Cinti that transferred to Highlands that I can recall. Jeff Ruby's kid came as a frosh and left after his sophomore year and transferred to Moeller. Another frosh the same year ( a friend of Ruby's) came and stayed but wasn't an impact player.

As another poster mentioned, the Ft. Thomas Junior Football League does not play games against Cincy teams (or N. Ky teams either for that matter). It truly is an intercity league that only competes against other teams within the City. There is no traveling team either. The rosters are split up to try and evenly divide the talent amongst the teams. The philosophy of the league is to get a lot of kids playing time (minimum participation rule) while trying to develop a lot of different kids at each position. It's worked pretty well. This year the league celebrates its 50th year anniversary.

Heck most high schools in EKY haven't even been around 50 years.

They used to play in the Northern Ky Middle School league but as that league evolved out of a fundmental/learn the game mentality to a win, win , win at all cost. Highlands went back to their proven system. I believe they left in 1992 or so and if you look at their history from mid 1990's on you can't agrue with the results

Russell is back to running the Russell JFL in this same format. After decades of doing it this way they went to travel teams for the past few years but we are now back to the intra league format to develop as many players as possible. An approach that I think works much better and has proven itself for those that use it.
