Torrential downpours and a mud pit of a field didn’t seem to hinder the Conner Cougars’ offensive game plan one bit on Friday.
Senior quarterback Nick West efficiently completed 14 of 16 passes for 260 yards and five touchdowns to lift the Cougars, ranked fourth in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches’ poll.
“It was hard to grip the ball,” said West, who matched a career-high in TD passes. “I was trying to shot-put it out there. It’s really anything goes on a night like tonight.”
West adjusted by throwing side-armed at times, and he attributed his success to the receivers running precise routes.
West’s longest completion of the game perhaps was his worst-thrown pass of the night, he said. He connected with senior tight end Anthony Boden on a 40-yard TD pass down the right side with five minutes left in the first quarter to give Conner a 13-0 advantage.
“It was poorly thrown,” West said. “It felt like one of my worst passes all year, but (Boden) ran and got it.”
Much like it did in last week’s 42-14 win over Boone County, Conner surged to an early double-digit lead. The Cougars took advantage of two interceptions and big pass plays to jump up 20-0 early in the second quarter.
Senior safety Eric Champ intercepted Campbell County quarterback Michael Kremer’s pass, setting up the Cougars at Campbell County’s 40-yard line with 5:04 left in the opening quarter. That set-up Boden’s score on the ensuing play.
It was junior Brandon Ernstes’ interception that set up Conner’s next score. On the first play of the second quarter, West completed a 24-yard TD pass to senior Michael Gill.

The Cougars had three interceptions.
“We create touchdowns at the right time,” said Conner coach Dave Trosper, whose team avenged last season’s loss to Campbell County. “Our defense springboards our offense.”
It was Conner’s final home game of the season, and the seniors reflected on how much progress the program has made.
“It feels awesome being 7-1, especially considering we were 1-9 my sophomore year,” senior Huston Dockery said. “We’ve come a really long way.”
The Cougars now turn their focus to a critical district road game next week against cross-county rival Ryle. Both teams are 2-1 in district play.
“You’re playing for home-field advantage (in opening-round of the playoffs),” Trosper said. “We’ve got to show up next week.”

This score should come as no surprise. With Eshman and Johnson out for the Camels, they are really going to struggle the rest of the season.
Next week's game between Ryle and Conner should be a good one.

Include Koenenger, Steffen, Glasgow, Shepard, Durham, Stanley, Macht and the heart is completely gone. They are resolved to play 6A Varsity football with a JV roster.
