A few good players graduated. But they return a lot of good players. They return the main pitching core. They didn't beat Greenup or Boyd but they beat pretty much all of the other region teams at least 1 time in the season.

They will be as good or better then last year. They have several returning players from last year, as well as all of the pitchers. They also play in the All A Region this year, which is at Russell. Should be a good year for baseball.

I know a lot of Russell people who used to laugh at the All A. Now they are getting into it because they can't beat teams their size. The All A should just be done away with. It's no longer for the small schools. Now 3A schools want in so they can try to win titles. If you can't beat the big boys, then get into the small school stuff.

Do I really need to go back through their schedule and prove you wrong because I love schooling people who don't know their facts. They might not have the talent to beat the top teams in the state but they are a force to most teams in this region. Its been a few years since Russell beat Greenup,Boyd but they have beat them in the last 5 years or so.
I don't know who you know who know from Russell who laughed at the all A but I always thought it was a chance for smaller teams to win a championship and build confidence.
11-10-2009, 03:46 PM
StatMaster I think you're just mad because Raceland don't have a cake walk to the All A region championship like in the past.
11-11-2009, 09:36 AM
Raceland has only won it once or twice anyway. That's not it. I've got friends from Russell who would always laugh at the All A. Saying that it was funny that the only thing that Raceland has a chance to win in was a made up tourney for tiny schools. Now Russell is going to play in them. I guess not so funny now. When was the last time Russell beat Boyd in baseball?
11-11-2009, 04:51 PM
Last beat beat Boyd in 07, last beat Greenup County in 06.

Heard they have a new pitching coach.

I am going with later rather than sooner. Greenup, East, Boyd, and maybe Ashland are in a class by themselves.

Does the score 11-2 russell big winners over ashland ring a bell to you maybe you should know your facts about Russell baseball before you go saying these schools are in a league of their own and East Carter beat Russell 7-5 and 3-1. To say these 2 are in a league of their own tells me you don't follow Russell baseball like I follow all Russell sports.
Maybe you don't have much knowledge of the 16th region because I do and right now the powers are Greenup East and Boyd. But again to say Greenup,East,Boyd are in a league of their own just shows how much you really know. If they was in a league of their own Russell would never be able to beat them ever.

The first game Boyd Killed Russell 20-3 but the 2nd game in may it was a 14-10 win for boyd.
So I think the scores show that these teams aren't that much better than Russell few breaks here and there and maybe Russell wins those games between boyd and east.
Greenup was the only team who just dominated Russell everytime they played last year it was 9-1 and 10-3.

I think that baseball is a funny sport, and pitching can really even things up on a given day. I believe East, GC, and Boyd are all capable of winning 3 straight games and the region. Russell may fly up and upset one of them, but I don't know about winning 3 straight in the regional tourney. Russell always has good looking athletes, they never seem to get over the hump. I think what is seperating the teams you mention and Russell is a good summer program, and a fall schedule. Those other teams are year round now. The others also take much pride in their facilities and have made many upgrades the last few years.

If greenup put as much effort into football as baseball they might have some football talent. It takes talent to win and Russell has talent to beat most team and upset any team on any given day in the region can't say the same for those 3 in all sports.

I would bet anything alot of greenup high school players have got their start in the Russell-Flatwoods Little elague and to do that you have to live in the russell-flatwoods area.So I have to wonder how many players started in Russell middle school and moved to greenup area to play baseball at the high school level.
The Russell-Flatwoods and Ashland-national are the best little league teams around here for baseball.

If we are talking football Russell is the pinnacle, I agree. I just don't think they take baseball as serious. I am not bashing Russell athletics, overall they are competetive in every sport. I love their football facilities, they just don't take very good care of their baseball field. The individual coach of each sport is responsible for their sport, obviously Russell has some fine coaches in most sports. I believe the other schools you mention would compete in every sport but football, with the exception of Boyd basketball, which used to be dominant but has fallen on tough times.

As far as the baseball field I agree it needs work but overall Russells facilities are top notch the softball field/football is great the tennis court is great etc.
But really answer this one how much money does a game of baseball bring to the school athletic directer to purchase new stuff?
Football makes the most with basketball second at Russell.
Basketball and football are the bread and butter of high school athletics pretty much everywhere.

Correct. Not to mention that Russell practices football on their baseball field. Luther Craig would roll over in his grave if Boyd thought about practicing football on their baseball field. And don't give me the song and dance about facility space. Russell has huge acreage 400 yards east of the high school to practice football if they wish. Baseball will always be a 3rd class citizen at Russell. They have some talent, but may be another year away from being truly worthy of being considered in the conversation with the Boyds, Ashland, and Greenup. Of course this is only my opinion and goreddevils will likely rebut my opinion.

Yeah, I saw it. One game. Russell will never dedicate much effort to the baseball program. That's all I'm saying. They are not going to be a regional power this season, however when the sophomores and frosh get a little maturity, I think that they can be a top team in the region. That's what I'm saying. They got a freshman transfer from East Carter named Troy Huffine who should help also. But you already knew that because no one follows Russell sports like you follow Russell sports.:worthy:

To see how good a team truly is, you need to play with both teams having their best pitcher on the mound. A team can beat someone if they have their ace on the mound and the other is using a younger pitcher. To be considered the best, beat a team with their ace on the mound. A school like Russell or Raceland, can beat some better teams(sometimes but not regularly) when you get one of the better teams young guys on the mound.

Russell definitely has young talent coming up, especially pitchers if they don't allow them to ruin their arms when they are young.

My son played a few years ago in Russell-Flatwoods LL, Greenup had no team one year, the next year they did. He was on all stars the year Greenup had no team, and was not eligible the year the did. We really enjoyed it there and made many friends. My kid goes to Raceland now,out of district(Greenup),and we always enjoy played Russell in any sport. There are alot of good kids there, and we always want them to do well.
