At the beginning of the week, Dixie Heights receivers Bobby Leonard and Goose Cohorn did not know who was going to be throwing them passes on Friday against Boone County at Owen Hauck Stadium.
Starting quarterback Zeke Pike and his backup Corbin DeMatteo were knocked out of the Colonelsâ previous game with injuries. Billy Menkhaus is the third-string quarterback.
"Early on in the week, we didnât know who was going to play quarterback," said Leonard. "They said Zekeâs shoulder was hurt. Corbin couldnât play. But Zeke went out there and practiced."
Playing seven days after suffering a grade-1 non-throwing shoulder separation, the right-handed Pike put in a grade-A performance against the Rebels while leading the quick-strike Colonels to a 41-16 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.
"Heâs a tough kid," Dixie coach Tom Spritzky said of Pike.
Boone led 10-7 at halftime on a Jordan Oppenheimer 1-yard touchdown run and a field goal, but a stiffening Dixie defense, Rebel turnovers and Pikeâs gritty determination helped generate 27 unanswered third-quarter points in 6 minutes and 28 seconds for the Colonels.
Pike completed 65 percent of his passes and threw for 225 yards and four touchdowns on plays of 15 yards to Cohorn in the second quarter, 12 yards to Leonard in the third, 24 yards to Cohorn in the third and 80 yards on a fourth-quarter catch-and run by tailback Seth Bruns.
"We were just going to limit his carries and let him sit back there in the pocket and throw it," Leonard said. "He had a great game throwing it. And he ran it, too."
Pike scored on a 26-yard run down the near sideline 17 seconds after he hit Leonard for a touchdown with 7:29 to play in the third quarter. Leonardâs score gave Dixie the lead for good, 13-10. Pikeâs score was set up by a lost Boone County fumble following a six-yard carry on first down.
The Rebels turned over the ball on downs on their ensuing drive, giving Dixie possession at the Boone 34. Four plays later, Bruns scored on an 18-yard scamper for the Colonelsâ third touchdown in less than four minutes.
A Boone fake punt on the next possession misfired for an 11-yard loss back to the Rebelsâ own 27. Three plays later, Pike found Cohorn for their second TD hook-up of the game with 1:01 to play in the third.
Just like that, Dixie led 34-10.

Ouch, I've been there and I guarantee you I wasn't playing football a week later. Pike might be a headcase, but he's tough. I'm impressed.

Ok Dixie fans, after watching your team this week(a team that is banged up), what do you look for next week in the playoffs. If I remember correctly, you play Ashland. Good luck and bring back a victory for NKY.

Can you dig it? Wrote:Ouch, I've been there and I guarantee you I wasn't playing football a week later. Pike might be a headcase, but he's tough. I'm impressed.
He is more than a head case. I heard the Bruns boys left Dixie because he would yell racial slurs at them in the huddle (and nothing was done when parents went to the school).
