They are at a disadvantage of having to play for the coach hired by their school whether they are a good coach or not.You have a really good post here. Jeff Honeycutt is the boys coach @ Cordia, a tiny class A school of around 250 K-12. The last 2 years he has knocked 2 of the Central High School's out of the district. This year they were surposed, and still may compete for the region. he has had trouble with SOME players wanting to dedicate themselves to what it takes to compete. Players missing practice repeated times with no excuse, and then when he has to put his foot down some on here thinks he is the devil or bad coach. What I was saying is he has been there long enough that if the players don't want to play for him either don't play or go somewhere else before the season starts. Don't come out, miss practices or break team rules then blame him when they quit or he kicks them off. Saying he is a bad coach is their opinion and they are entitled to it, but personal attacks on his character is just a bunch of crap and uncalled for
I have been around long enough to see good coaches and bad coaches, coaches that are fair minded and those that will stick it to a kid for a variety of reasons. The current system is established thinking that everyone will be fair minded though. Knucklehead coaches usually don't last long, but high school players only get a limited number of years to participate. Even having one year of that messed up by a coach or controversy not of their doing isn't right.
I have heard and read many times that the coach is in charge and makes the decisions. I was taught to listen and respect the coach while I was growing up, but as you get older, you begin to know the individuals. These people aren't Gods and certainly don't always make the right decisions in their lives or concerning thier programs. From pee wee, little league all the way through high school, adults have agendas. You hope if they do something truly horrible, someone will speak out, but sometimes these agendas aren't even apparent to them. It may be they click with a certain player or don't with another. Sometimes they need to be questioned so they may understand thier own actions.
However, kids rarely have an opportunity to voice thier concerns or do it in the right way. I would never have gone in to my coach at 16 years old to have a discussion that suggested he was wrong or out of line. I might have let my emotions get the best of me and say I quit, but that would never have lasted long with my parents.
But if there is one thing I have learned, if there is enough complaining for long enough, there generally is a problem. However, until someone questions the problem, the kids have to take or quit because finding a better fit isn't available to them.

Wait til they get a little older. Bo is a lot more fun away from the court than around it. Although when they are old enough to hang out, Bo will be about 60.

My kids aren't old enough to be in organized sports so I am a little out of tune, but where are the parents? My dad would never have allowed me to miss practice.
I wanted to quit playing during the season one year and the answer was no. I didn't have to play the next year, but I wasn't going to quite during the season and I was going to practice and play hard. Good head on his shoulders although I thought he was an idiot until I was out of high school. It is amazing how much smarter your parents seem when you get kids of your own.
Although my mom has become a lunatic with mine now. I would get my hide tanned if I got a smudge on the wall and she lets my kids finger paint the playroom walls. She says it is fostering their creative spirit.

Honeycutt has always been good to his players. He may not be Red Auerbach but he is good to his players. The stories you hear or whatever are outrageous. I've known worse stories to be told on Al Holland but they never hit the light of day. Honeycutt is one of the best people and he does have a good relationship with his players because everyone on the team likes him.

Twayne Willis and Al Holland was a good combo. Great work ethic and a good coach.
