Then maybe the old man or his predecessor, will rekindle the flame of the Rail City Bowl. I think both teams benefit from it financially, the food drive was always successful, and with area football being as it is, i dnt think Ashland, Raceland, Russell, Ironton, and Johnson Central can afford not to play eachother. Hopefully it goes back to the way it was in the early nineties where everyone played everyone.
You forgot Harris.
Russell and Raceland didn't play each other in the mid 90s.

Orange Blaze Wrote:As far as football goes, I wish Raceland played away this week so I could see what Pikeville looks like. I don't know much about either team to make a meaningful assessment but judging by the trends of the past few seasons, it seems as though these are two programs going in different directions. Regardless of the outcome, I hope everyone makes it out of this game healthy for playoff season.
The Panthers look much like last year......only better.

I believe Russells had enough talent over the last 4- 5 years to have been a whole lot more competitive than they have been. The coaching just hasn't been there. A lot had to do with Ivans wife being sick with cancer and then passing, and all the health problems Ivan has had. Those are some major issues anyone would have trouble with, let alone trying to run a football program. And we can see now that Morris is about the only compatant assistant he had. Unfortunatly he left things in Smiths hands. At this point theres still a lot of questions, will Ivan get healthy enough to take the reigns back, if not, how long will he stay on and let Smith run the program. and if Smiths running things how many kids will not bother to play or transfer. Maybe im wrong, and I hope so and will gladly eat a big plate of crow, but I don't think Ivan will ever be able to take this program and run it like it needs to be ran. So do you out of loyalty to Ivan let him stay and take a huge chance that the program will continue to slide and lose players and may take years to build back up. Or do you overlook one person and do what may be best for Russell football and quietly ask Ivan to retire. OFcoarse theres a third option, and that is to let Evans take control of the offense, weve seen what Smith can do. Ivans probley to loyal to these coaches to step down, knowing that a new coach would cause them to lose their coaching jobs. As a Russell fan im just as torn as the next as to what should be done. This is just how I see it right or wrong.

Ivan is getting stronger and he's as sharp as ever.
I would let Evans run the Offense, Morris Run the Defense and have Smith coach the line and be responsible for subs during the game.
There is a lot of young talent coming up and this has been the bottom out year.
There is reason for optimism mightydog.

I may be jumping the gun but I thought Smith was leaving after this year? I thought his wife was retiring and they were moving down south? I've been wrong before but that was the word I had heard.

Wasn't that long ago, Russell was competing with the likes of Belfry, Ashland, Ironton, and others with success. However, this is not the Russell of those days. Still though, they're a 3-A School, and it should be a good competition for Pikeville.

Ashland Blazer only beat them 7-6. But the Tomkittens are kind of down this year too.
