2A- Somerset v. Covington Holy Cross @ Newport
#61
Well said coach. Either team has a chance of winning. Its all about execution. Some people are a little touchy and want to assume the worst all of the time. Good luck to both teams
nky Wrote:So saying a team SHOULD be fine is some how what exactly? To me that means they SHOULD have a chance of winning just as they may have a chance of not. IF Holy Cross executes on both sides of the ball they they have shown though out the season They SHOULD be fine. Meaning in the end they could have a chance of winning the game. In the end that's all you want out of your players.

All of you fans that think HC will walk through Somerset are in for a rude awakening. Their defense is fast and aggressive... and is difficult to score on consistently throughout a ball game. HC may have one long drive and maybe get a long score, but I predict that HC wont score more than 2 TD against the Somerset defense on length of field drives. Now picks or fumble recoveries is a different story and that will decide the game. I dont see HC scoring over 20 points against Somerset. I predict Somerset 28 to 20.

Holy Cross has given up more than 20 points only three times this year. Their def is playing better now than they have all year and you think Somerset will score near 28. I dont see it happening. From what I call tell the closest match up that Somerset has played to us has been Glasgow and Breth. Co. This may be a very low scoring game because of both defenses. Something like 21-14 Holy Cross. Aver per games are like 40-19 so I deffenatly see Somerset having trouble scoring on HC. But thats why we play the game, to see how good we are at this arm chair coaching.

Difference in SOS attributes to that discrepancy. 40.8 Avg. PPG to 26.7 in favor of Holy Cross. Defenses are in favor of Somerset giving up 13.8 PPG to Holy Cross' 17.8 PPG.

I agree with you and Im a Holy Cross fan. This is a very good football team and this should be a very good game. Neither team in my opinion is gonna walk thru the other. These are two good teams who deserve to be here. Good Luck to both teams

With no common opponents and with both teams being much different teams from what they were early in the year I don't think there is really a good way for any of us to accurately predict this game. Obviously both teams are very good or they would not be playing this weekend. Both teams seem to have changed their gameplans week to week according to the opponent. Somerset seems to have played the tougher schedule but Holy Cross is playing at home (sort of). I've watched film or Holy Cross and I really don't know what to expect as far as how either team will do against the other. The only thing I do expect is to see two very good teams giving it their all on Friday and I think it will be a very hard fought game no matter who wins.

Im not really sure why some Somerset fans think that HC thinks they will roll right thru them with no problem. I assure you, no one in the HC camp thinks that. Somerset has great tradition, a great football team, and a strong fan base. HC knows they will have to play very well to win this game

I agree, but I have to speculate. It is tough to figure this game out. I wish them both the best, just Holy Cross a little more.

Oh, nothing wrong with speculation. It's just that normally I can come up with a good idea of how the game will go. In this case both teams change their game plans so much to adjust to their opponents I'm having a hard time coming up with a prediction.

To nunn 426: the jumpers won a very tough game on the road at hazard and came out alive. I agree I worry about them on the road, but the Whitley game was robbed from them with TERRIBLE officiating and having 4 touchdowns called back on phantom calls, and the perry central game was literally played in a cow pasture... 6 inches of mud all over the field. The only game that they legitimately lost on the road was at breathitt, and even the 20-0 score is. It indicative of how they played. Turnovers have been the keys in somersets losses. Early in the year Shs didn't have an offensive identity, but they are clicking seemingly well right now. This game is honestly a coin flip, but I can assure you the jumpers are prepared for the stage and hostile environment... They have been in this position for the past 3 years, and 6 of the past 11 years running... This staff knows the stage well.

It was actually 3 touchdowns called back at Whitley County 4 sounds better though, in a few years it will be 6. That story gets wilder with age. I agree otherwise though.

3 or 4 norm... Doesn't matter, we just needed one!

Well, let's hope for a good crew of officials. This time of year, you never know where they are coming from and what kind of reputation they have. By the way, Holy Cross fans might be loud and enthusiastic, but I would not call them hostile (even though the mascot is an Indian). I don't think they have read that chapter of the football fan manual yet. However, basketball is a different story...

I have read a few post saying that the jumpers have pkayed a tougher schesule and that this will help them in the game this week. Not knowing anything about the teams down that way, it appears that the two teams pkayed about the same strength of schedule. Does anyone know of a glairing difference in the schedules?
#78
I'm only picking Holy Cross cause Somerset has to travel 2 and a half to 3 hours to play 4 quarters, maybe even overtime of a competitive football game. If this game was in Somerset, I'd pick Somerset. I think both teams are very similar in style of play and talent.

I think when most people talk about Somerset's tougher schedule, they are comparing it to previous years not Holy Cross's. Coach Lucas has really improved the schedule this year compraed to the previous Coach. Somerset added Hazard a pre-ennial 1A finalist, Breathitt Co one of the top 4-5 schools in 3A, Glasgow a top ranked team in 2A and 4 5A teams in addition to playing Danville and Lex. Christian in their district.

I don't think anyone is knocking Holy Cross's schedule at all.

FWIW as far as anyone can recall Somerset had never won a game off grass. Lost 5 Finals and at Belfry LY to name a few turf losses. So that should give Holy Cross a definite advantage.....but in the words of Lee Corso "Not so Fast my friend". Jumpers broke the turf curse this year winning at Hazard 14-0. Lets Go Jumpers!!!

I enjoy the Belfry support... After Somerset's history with Belfry it's nice to see them do extremely well year after year and to know they like to see us do well too.

Really? I'm like HC straight up. To me, NCC was the best team in 2A hands down! I think the Indians are the better team!

Just like I said earlier... Some HC people are assuming that just because HC beat NCC, that there's no way they can lose now...

I would love to see support from some of the other mountain teams and Somerset's district at this game. I know its a long drive but everyone would appreciate seeing some fans representing

Well, I'm no HC "people", but you are right, they will win this game!

It does seem to me that people seem to think since HC beat Newport - they wont lose the rest of the way.. I watched the Newport and HC game. Yes two very good teams, but New port defensive gameplan was horrible - they gave the short pass to HC - that is why HC threw the ball 35x.. Newport never ever made an adjustment. go figure. watching I could not understand what they were thinking. HC consistently had 3 wr against 2 db or 4 and 3. It more than likely wont be that easy against the Jumpers!
#89
I really dont know why you keep saying that. No one that are true HC fans that know football assume anything. You have to play the games to win and all of the teams are good that are still playing. NO ONE is taking Somerset lightly. They are a good team and everyone in the HC camp respect them greatly

There are people responding on here that think HC will win or expect them too that arent HC fans. The same holds true with Somerset. There are people who are just expecting them to win it all now. Anyone that knows football knows this is going to be a great game
