Congrats SW, The Black Bears got beat at their own game! Didn't play Black Bear Football til the 4th quarter, missed some chances but that's how it goes! Hate this for the Seniors thanks for a great season.
#32
Hats off to SW. They matched the Black Bear physicality and came away with the win. Huge defensive battle tonight by both teams. Always hard on the seniors in their ending final game. Great season Black Bears! I am proud to be a Black Bear. Good luck to SW Warriors! I think you are heading to Bowling Green, if the Warriors continue to bring their game. GO BLACK BEARS!!!!!!
#33
Very proud of those Black Bears and thanks for all the excitement and pleasure you have given us this season. Thanks to that Black Bear Coaching Staff too. The Coaching Staff has done a tremendous job and they run a topnotch program. The Black Bear Nation is proud and looking forward to another great season next year. Keep your heads up! Harlan County loves you. Even when things just dont go right. Good luck again to SW, hope yall win it all! GO BLACK BEARS!!!!!

Good good game!
Tough hard hitting battle from these two squads.

Big bunch of HC fans at SW too, NICE showing of support people. Wow.

Congrats WARRIORS on a big big win!
Keep rolling Blue and Orange!

What a game!!!! This is the best game i have seen this year. The play of the game was when Harlan kicked off and the ball stop a inch from going out of bounds. Number 10 for southwestern picks it up and runs it back. Heck of a play. Congrats to Harlan County on a great season. good luck to SW next week.
#36
That was a good return no doubt. Good one Latrell
The OT TD catch by Williams was one heck of a catch though
(about 10 feet from me, I had a real good view of it)

Both fantastic plays...

GO WARRIORS!!!
#37
There is no doubt by far the best HS game I have witnessed in several years. Harlan has nothing to be ashamed of they played a hard nosed game like we all thought they would. You could not have had 2 more evenly matched teams playing their hearts out. Warriors what a great defensive effort tonight.

Danial Boone #65 and his posse get it done. Way to go men!
#38
SW can beat Anderson County.
#39
What a game!!

First off, let me congratulate the Southwestern Warriors on their win. I truely hope you go forward all the way to Bowling Green and win it all!!! This is probably the best game I've seen all year. Great football atmosphere and I met some really nice folks.

Secondly, I want to say how proud I am of my Black Bears. I love you guys; and have enjoyed this football season more than any other!! Please keep you heads held high; your efforts were there and you represented Harlan County so well.

Lastly, anyone at Southwestern find a cell phone under the visitor's bleachers???? Think I may be in the market for another one!!

Good luck Southwestern Warriors!!!

Good luck Southwestern Warriors!!!

I want to give a huge shout out to the Black Bear fan base. You are top notch fans and represent what high school football should be about! Met a few of you again last night and it was a pleasure! The team has NOTHING to hang their heads about. That is one of the best hs games I have ever witnessed and I feel both teams played their hearts out. Great job Bears on a great season and Warrior's let's stay humble and take care of Anderson Bearcats!!!!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!!

What a game, I was hoping our bears took this game but southwestern came to play and showed what they were made of. Congrats to Southwestern.
#42
To all my Black Bear friends, congrats on another outstanding year. You have to be proud that your team each year allows you to enjoy this wonderful game well after the rest of us are just bystanders. It's been very fun seeing the passion from the HC fans and I look forward to it next year. Great job and what a wonderful fanbase.

As for the Warriors, what a tremendous season this has turned into. After starting the season 1-3, I had doubts of this team, and probably got caught thinking they were not that good. Since the Danville game, this team found a new gear and before the playoffs started, never won by less than two touchdowns. It could have been easy to get down on this team, but they have made a believer out of me. Good luck next week against Anderson County.

After watching SW in the first round against Whitley, i knew there was something about this team that could get them there, but ill be the first to say i honestly didnt think SW could beat HC.
Looks like they should have kicked Dale out a long time ago and made stephens the coach years ago, hes got these boys on a roll.
Goodluck SW and represent this region well.
I firmly believe SW can beat Anderson County and hopefully we'll get to see that Friday and if that happens a trip to Bowling Green is next!

Congrats Chili and SW again on a great season.

Thanks a bunch.

Last night's game was one of the best that I've ever witnessed. There were a ton of hard hits by both squads. It's a shame the both teams had to lose.

Congrats to the Harlan County Black Bears on a great season. By the way, your fan section last night was amazing. The visitor's sideline was packed.

With the win, the Warriors win their first-ever region championship. In their last attempt in 2006, SW fell to Louisville Central in OVERTIME by a score of 47-40.

Next up is Anderson County. Let's take it to STATE!
#45
Congrats Warriors, keep it going!

What a battle! Congrats to Southwestern Pulaski on a great win. It was an amazing atmosphere for high school football last night. Both teams left it on the field last night and represented their county well. Good luck to SWP and I hope you guys win it all in Bowling Green.

The sun came up here in Harlan County this morning. I'm sure there are some disappointed Black Bears still trying to get some much deserved rest this morning. It's been a pleasure following and supporting this team. They've brought a lot of excitement to the county and it has been a blast. It's been a pleasure watching the seniors the past four years. Thanks to the coaching staff for another thrilling season and for all their time, hard work, and dedication to our children. Harlan County is lucky to have you all. Hold your head's high Black Bears. We are very proud of you.

WOW...what a game...hard fought on both sides!!!...great crowd support for both teams!...But it is sure hard to take a loss this far into the season!...Hats off to SW!!!...congrads to the Warriors!

I love watching my Bears play every year!...watching them grow from year to year!...they have played well!...the program, our wonderful coaches have established, is flourishing!...and I couldn't be prouder of everyone that contributes to it!....I love sitting next to all my mamma bears and pappa bears alike...and can't wait to see you all next year!

it's time to say farewell! ...eat a huge turkey dinner!...and rest up for next season!...wink!

Go HC BLACK BEARS!!!....:Cheerlead

( And on a side note...so glad to have my avater back!)

SW made play after play when they needed to. Each time HC would turn the tide, SW would make another play. SW team speed was superior to that of HC.SW has some good looking football players and if they play as intense next week and can make play after play, they will be traveling to BG ---No doubt.
#49
WOW!! Hate this for HC. But congrats Southwestern!

Ha Ha just another PCC cheering for another team to beat the Black Bears! Our seniors have filled up our trophy case, what about yours plenty of Basketball trophies I guess! Well maybe there is one for a lot of tackles or the most jackasses in a fanbase, but I'll take those district and regional trophies any day!!! Go Bear!!!!
#52
Congrats SW!!! Again, another game I would have LOVED to have seen. Too bad both hometown teams played at the exact same time and I've gotta support my #1. Very impressive to have 2 teams from Somerset still in this thing.

Very impressive win...I thought Harlan Co. would be too much, but SW is rolling right now.

True, but HC made play after play as well, shutting down SW offense in the second half. Including when the Warriors were near the goal line. SW team speed was NOT superior to that of HC. SW does have some good looking football players and they matched the physicality and intensity that the Bears provide as well. It was a slobberknocker and SW came out with the win. No way can anyone say that the Warriors speed was superior to that of HC. Hats off to SW, you got some MOJO, keep it going, and win it all. Great season for those Black Bears, I know that they didn't accomplish their goal, but the Black Bear Nation is proud of those Bears, especially those seniors. It has been an amazing four years! GO BLACK BEARS!!!

is it true about Harlan fumbling 6 times? You aren't going to win many playoff games doing that no matter how talented...heard they recovered ab 4 of them, but it still sets a bad tone, shaken confidence and generally lost yards on the play. off night, SW defense too tough or mix of both?
#55
^^^
I didn't think that we had fumbled 6 times, but I could be wrong.

These two teams just lined up and went at it tooth and nail!! I almost wish I had been a Corbin fan (there were a couple there) who had no dog in the fight so that I could have enjoyed it more.

Somerset — There’s a first time for everything.

A first happened for the Southwestern Warriors last night, as they won their first regional championship in the program’s 19-year history.

With a 28-21 overtime victory over defending regional champion Harlan County in last night’s Region 4 Championship game, Andy Stephens and crew earned a trip to the semifinals of the Class 5A State Playoffs, where they will face Anderson County.

Stephens knew that he had a successful group of players prior to the start of the 2011 high school football season.

“When we were practicing this summer, we knew we had a lot of talent and were very athletic,” began Stephens, who has led Southwestern to a nine-game winning streak since taking over as the Warriors’ interim coach. “We knew we had the potential to be good, we just had to come together as a team and start doing the things that we needed to do win. We knew we that we had the pieces needed to be successful.”

This contest between the two physical teams needed overtime to settle a winner, as both squads were tied 21-21 at the end of regulation. Harlan County won the toss and chose to play defense first, forcing the Warriors to play offense.

On the first play of overtime, senior Zack Turpin took the snap, back-peddled, and threw the ball in the direction of fellow tight end Alan Williams. Williams then came up with a spectacular catch for the ten-yard touchdown reception. Freshman

Pedro Herrera converted on the extra point, putting the Warriors out front by seven points at 28-21.

The Black Bears of Harlan County needed seven points to tie or eight points to win the game on their overtime turn. However, none of that mattered, as Harlan County fumbled the ball on their turn. The Warriors then came up with the loose ball, clinching the school’s first-ever regional championship with a 28-21 win over the

Black Bears, who came into the game as the favorite to repeat as region champs.

Harlan County struck first in this one, as Black Bear quarterback Jordy Brewer scampered down the field for a 51-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed, making the score, 6-0, in favor of the Black Bears. That would also be the score at end of the opening period.

Southwestern took a 7-6 advantage with 5:48 left until halftime with a 8-yard touchdown run from senior Dustin Powell, along with a kick from Herrera.

The Warriors would score again less than three minutes later, as Turpin hit senior Latrell Wilson in stride for a 62-yard touchdown pass. Herrera’s PAT failed, but Southwestern still led, 13-6, with just over three minutes left until the intermission. At the break, Stephens and crew led by six points.

The Black Bears would tie the game up at 13 apiece with 11:08 left in regulation with a Brewer run and an extra point from Josh Jenkins.

Southwestern would answer back in a huge way on the following kick-off. Wilson took the kick-off off the bounce, picked it up, and sprinted down the sideline for a 84-yard kick-off return touchdown. The Warriors converted on their two-point conversion play, as Williams threw a jump pass to fellow senior Justin Epperson. The Warriors now led 21-13 with 10:53 left in the fourth period.

“That was big, because we were struggling a little bit” said Stephens of Wilson’s big return. “Latrell did a nice job and had a super return. It was covered well, he just made two or three cuts and took the ball to the end zone.”

Harlan County wasn’t done with their scoring spree, as Brewer hit Austin Maggard on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 8:01 left in regulation. The Black Bears converted on their two-point try, tying the game up at 21-21.

Turpin had a stellar game for Southwestern, going 4 of 7 for 107 yards and two scores. Two of his four completions were touchdown scores to Williams and Wilson.

Wilson hauled in one pass, which was a 62-yard touchdown reception. The senior also had a huge 84-yard kick-off return for a touchdown.

Williams also caught one pass, which was a spectacular 10-yard touchdown reception.

The Southwestern offense had 138 rushing yards and 107 passing yards for a combined 245 total yards on the night.

“We can do so many different things with our quarterbacks,” explained the Southwestern interim head coach. “All of our quarterbacks are different, so it makes it a little tougher to prepare for.”

On the ground, Powell finished with 141 yards and a score on 28 carries.

The Black Bears were led by Brewer, who went 8 of 14 for 139 yards and a score in the air. On the ground, Brewer had 66 yards and two touchdowns on 13 attempts.

The Southwestern defense held the highly-touted Harlan County offense to 296 offensive yards (157 rushing yards and 139 passing yards).

“We loaded up the box and did the best that we could do to take that away,” told Stephens. “Our guys played hard and physical. That’s what we asked them to do all week, and that’s what they did tonight.”

With the win, Southwestern ups their record to 10-3 overall on the season and moves their winning streak to nine games.

The Warriors will travel to Lawrenceburg on Friday, Nov. 25, to face Anderson County in the semifinals of the Class 5A State Playoffs.

Anderson County, who will bring a record of 11-2 into the match-up with the Warriors, advanced to the semifinals with a 31-30 victory over Conner last night.
