2A- Somerset v. Covington Holy Cross @ Newport

Dumpster Diving Wrote:I'm assuming a moderator has to change the title...? Was the game originally at Holmes and got changed?

It was assumed by everybody that the game would be at Holmes because that's where Holy Cross usually plays their home games. However, the surface at Holmes is in really bad shape this late in the year. I'm certain the school knew it would change the venue, they just didn't know where until Saturday night. Even though Somerset plays on grass, this will benefit both teams greatly.

NCC would have moved it from the turf to the crappy field if they thought it would give them an advantage. I like CHC more already.

Whats there not to like about Holy Cross?

Not a thing as far as I can tell. We're just on opposing sides this week.

Somerset fans - give yourselves plenty of time to get up to NKY. We currently have an outbreak of the state flower. Good tailgating opportunities under I-471 on Newport property. Plenty of room for both sets of fans.

I am also a Crossback and so is my kid. I am going with HC. I will say this, the defense hardly gets credit, but you better believe they are ready to play!

Nothing as far as I can tell, I like your posters on here. It is NCC I'm less partial to. That's probably why I enjoy Wideleft01's posts more than most.

The Holy Cross Nation is enjoying the ride! The last couple weeks has been about earning respect. I think that has been accomplished to some extent. It has been interesting to see NKY pull together to support the schools still left in the playoffs. Personally, I'd rather do analysis of the game and debate points of view rather than talk smack. But that may be just me!

Agreed, but the smack talk gives me things to tell my son to get him fired up for the game. I dont like making things up but believe me I will if I have to. LOL, just kidding.Confusednicker:

I'm taking it that there is plenty of parking then.... If not where is the best place to park.

Don't see much, if any smack talk developing this week between SHS and CHS.

As far as analysis goes, I noticed that Holy Cross had a huge passing game against NCC. Do they always throw the ball 30+ times a game?

Jumper Dad Wrote:FWIW on the "other" website that is very No. Ky heavy the current poll has HC with 25 votes Somerset with 9....here it is 9 to 8 Somerset

I'm from NKY. Reading the other website sometimes as I do. Check out how far more accurate the other poll is. The same way with the Ashland/CovCath poll. On here APB had a few more votes over there CovCath was 5-1 up. This happens a lot. I do like this site much more. The "other" site is 60% Highlands fans and it gets very old in a hurry.

Watched the broadcast. HC isn't doing anything on offense that Somerset hasn't seen and can't handle. Hc doesn't have the kind of speed that Somerset hasn't seen and can't handle. That being said, i'm rooting for HC and I think they will win.

HC fans need to give Somerset a LOT more credit... Feels like they are assuming that since they beat the almighty NCC that no one else compares... Somerset's starting defense RARELY lets people make it past them... It will take a breakaway play to score on Somerset. Teams do not score against them by driving it down their throats play after play. Seems like when teams take too long to score against the Somerset D, they eventually turn the ball over. Besides that, SHS's offense is on a roll. Everyone has confidence that our offense knows how to score and be a big threat. Looking for a big game from everyone. HC will be a tough game but it is nothing Somerset won't be prepared for. I think everyone is ready to Somerset get back to the state finals so hopefully this is their year.

Usually there is plenty of parking. This game could get crowded thou so a short walk will get you to two very large shopping parking lots. Worst case you may walk 3 or 4 football field lenths. If you are there anywhere before 30 minutes you can usually park on site.

I have to say that game was not the ordinary game for HC. I was totally suprised by the offensive game plan for that game. That the beauty of ''The HC'', next game could be so different you wont recognize the team. The coaching staff makes adjustments each week depending on who they play. The boys do a great job running whatever game plan they are given.

Holy Cross's offense is designed to take what the defense gives them. If the defense loads the box, they'll go deep. If the backers give the slot and TE room, they'll take the 5 yard pass. If the defense plays pass, they'll run. It can be difficult to stop if the defense has a spot HC can attack.

Holy Cross isn't really fast and they're not extremely physical, but they are fast and physical, and that's where they can do most of their damage. Even though they beat NCC, as a coach, that's not an ideal game to use for preparing for them. I'd say the loss to Conner and win over Cooper would be more beneficial.

Preview: Somerset at Holy Cross
By Dan Clasgens | Managing Editor

After coming up with the biggest win in school history by beating NewCath, the defending champs, Holy Cross now must do it all over again as they welcome the Somerset Brian Jumpers with a berth in the Kentucky Class 2A state championship game on the line.

Holy Cross is clicking on all cylinders, but while they are in unchartered territory, Somerset is a perennial playoff power. The Indians proved last week that when the whistle blows they won’t be intimidated.

Let’s take a deeper look at the state semi-final matchup:

SOMERSET (9-4) AT HOLY CROSS (10-3)
Site: Holmes Stadium, Tom Ellis Field
Kickoff: Friday, November 25 – 7:30 p.m.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Both teams are paced by great quarterback-wide receiver-combos. Alex Lange provides a dual-threat under center for the Briar Jumpers. The senior has developed great chemistry with classmate wide receiver Storm Wilson, who also is a huge weapon on special teams as a returner. For Holy Cross signal caller Kyle Fuller and wideout Eric Walker that have drawn rave reviews. The duo has connected for 16 scores through the air. The efforts of senior Adam Kozerski don’t always show up in the box scores, but he has provided a great boost to the Indians on both sides of the ball playing both tight end and linebacker.

TEAM TRENDS: Holy Cross is making their first-ever appearance in the state semi-finals after claiming the first regional title in school history. Somerset has won three straight regional titles and 15 overall. The Briar Jumpers won six of their last seven contests. The Indians have been on the winning side of the ledger in eight of their last nine contests. Only Owensboro Catholic put more points on the board than in Class 2A than Holy Cross has this season. They average 40.8 points per game while Somerset puts 26.8 points per outing on the scoreboard.

HOLY CROSS’ KEY TO VICTORY: Defense has propelled the Indians to this point as they’ve pitched shutouts in three of their last four contests. Getting out of the gate fast will help force the issue. Somerset is making the long trip up to Covington for the meeting and could be sluggish early on. Holy Cross in now in uncharted waters and they can’t let their nerves get the best of them. Coming such a monumental win, the Indians need to avoid a letdown. Taking care of the football is a must. Keeping the Briar Jumpers off balanced on defense should help lead to big plays.

SOMERSET’S KEY TO VICTORY: The Brian Jumpers tallied 298 yards on the ground in last week’s regional title game and will be looking to get something going on the ground again up against the Indians. Getting the ground game should help open the passing a bit two. The offensive line needs to do a good job at getting out on the active Holy Cross linebackers to help the offense to get going. Turnovers played a large part in Somerset’s win over Lexington Christian last week. Winning that battle will really help their chances of picking up a win on the long road trip. The tough district schedule and grueling non-district grind coupled with their experience in big games should prove to be beneficial.

PREDICTION: HOLY CROSS 28, SOMERSET 24

Still pick somerset for the win

Anybody that has seen good football and knows about quality high school football programs in NKY will give Somerset all of the credit in the world. You don't make it to the state semi's 3years in a row for no reason. Somerset is a very good football team and it will take a very good game from the Indians to beat them. That being said, I hope to see my Indians pull this one out. Good Luck to both teams

^ Play good defense and get the offense running on all cylinders without making stupid calls on the goal line Holy cross should do fine

nky Wrote:^ Play good defense and get the offense running on all cylinders without making stupid calls on the goal line Holy cross should do fine

that is exactly the attitude that was referenced above about assuming the win. No one is fine in 2A and certainly not in this game. :dontthink

Holy Cross 28-22.

Somerset 28-12 over Hc , Jumpers Defense is Strong don't think they will give up many points in this game!

So saying a team SHOULD be fine is some how what exactly? To me that means they SHOULD have a chance of winning just as they may have a chance of not. IF Holy Cross executes on both sides of the ball they they have shown though out the season They SHOULD be fine. Meaning in the end they could have a chance of winning the game. In the end that's all you want out of your players.
