South Laurel

E's Army Wrote:Donahue is an excellent coach and man. South would be lucky to have him.

From what I hear he is ready to retire and South im guessing doesnt want to have to hire again in a few years. Im sure he will say he wont retire or leave but apparently so did the last coach

Donahue had put his name in the hat previously if i'm not mistaken..would be a very good hire.

maybe if it was 10 years ago.

I can't see steve jewell in the cards for south.
#35
Donahue does more with less. Very good coach. Numbers are dwindling at Harlan. I could see him wanting to go where he is not behind the 8 ball number wise.

I would be shocked also but I think it would be a good move for both programs. Corbin and Jewell both need something new.
#37
Does anyone know if Donahue has applied? Would be a great hire, if so.

Coach Jewell would be a very good hire for South Laurel.

Has it been posted?

Coach Donahue is a great man and coach, he would be great. Coach Russ Shearer comes to mind as well, would hate to see him leave Jackson County because he has got Jackson on the right track and loves the kids. If South Laurel wanted a great coach, with professional and college coaching experience right up the road in Mckee, I would think they would make run at him....though I hope he get's what he needs to stay at Jackson Co long term.....the kids are great and have responded very well to his leadership!

Couldn't go wrong with Coach D or Coach Shearer both great coaches and Christian men!!

Based on all of the people I've talked with, a guy like Coach Shearer would be a great fit. I've heard nothing but positive comments about him both on and off the field. It would probably cause a few people to snub their noses a bit, because he would be coming from Jackson County, but I think he would be an outstanding hire.

If SL makes a run at him, I hope Jackson Co. puts up a fight and gives him what he needs to stay long term...the kids deserve a coach like him...

Best wishes to SL in their search, hope they get a good role model and coach for the kids...

Dont know Donahue. I do know that Shearer would be a great hire. Has he for sure put in for the job?

Coach Donhue is head coach at Harlan, good man and coach...don't know what Coach Shearer has done or who has spoken to him in regards to SL, if anything...but I hope JCHS does everything they can to keep him if he decided to put in for SL or any other job. The GENERALS have responded well to him, and he has built a solid foundation there, I hope for the kids sakes, they (JCHS) are able to do what is needed to keep him there long term - If SL has the chance to hire him, they would be blessed to have a coach like him! If JCHS has the chance to keep him they should do everything they can to ensure it! He inherited a program that was 3-49, and in 2 years led them to their first wining season 6-4 and he did it the right way....character, hard work and fundamentals!

I havent heard anything about the guy from Jackson applying, I've heard Sizemore, Pownski, Donahue and maybe an assistant from corbin have applied.

good coach

JB would do a good job. Does a good job teaching football.

Shearer would not be a good move. Played a very weak schedule at Jackson to get the wins he has, don't have many numbers.

Not sure who asst at Corbin would be?
#48
I SURE HOPE THAT jEWELL STAYS PUT, THE NEIGHBORS REALLY NEED HIM.
#49
JB Donahue is one of the best coaches in Eastern KY. He always has gotten more from less, his teams are fundamentally sound, and I would bet that more successful men have been developed under him per capita than any program this side of I-75. He has never had half the support he's needed from the administration and alumni from Harlan. I could see him at a program like South for a long time. Great coach. Even greater man.
#50
Donahue has done a fine job at Harlan and would do a good job wherever he coached. Yes, Jackson County's schedule was very weak, but guess what, so is Jackson County. Better to schedule light and try to build a program than go out and get drilled every Friday night. The numbers issue is irrelevant for the same reason. Shearer is trying to build a program literally from the ground up. What do you expect Jackson County to dress, 60? You are going to have to give better reasons than what you mentioned, Bill Muney.

Can a program who never had a winning record, and a program that had lost 49 of 52 games before Shearer got there have such a thing as a weak schedule? To have a weak schedule you have to be a strong program playing weaker teams, JCHS has never had a strong program, therefore, they are playing teams they should be, difference between this year and the past is they are starting to win against these teams they lost or would have lost to in the past...c'mon big fella....LOLConfusederiously:

I would love to see Jim Black at South. Might even be district foes with the Colonels after realignment .:Sad04:

Sizemore is at Bracken Co. Won five games two years ago and two games last year.

That would be a good move for Jim and SL. He would be an excellent hire.
#55
I'd hate to see it but Coach Sizemore would be a great hire, He's done a great job here with absoutely no resources, he single handily runs the entire football program with very little assistant coaches. I'd hate to see him go, but I would understand. I think he came here from there a few years ago.
#56
Sizemore was an assistant at South before getting the Bracken County job.
#57
South Laurel may want to contact John Poynter. He is from Rockcastle and looking to get back closer to home from what I hear. This is kinda right up coach poynter alley, taking programs that are struggling and makeing them successful. Poynter has won everywhere he has been and has a lot of experience in this situation. Poynter gets the most out of what he has. JMO

A south fan told me the other day about Sizemore, they really liked him and said he was on a bad staff with a limited role and that is why he left. He said that a lot of south fans would like to see him come back and be the coach.
#59
Letton, Lucas, Donahue, Black, Graham. I have no problem with any, they are all great coaches. Hire one!!!!
#60
I have heard that a lot of the South folks liked Sizemore while he was there. He seems to have done a decent job at Bracken.
